Men's Volleyball Defeats Hiram in Road Non-Conference Match

HIRAM, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team took on Hiram College for a non-conference match inside Price Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets (5-0) the Terriers (1-4) 

BW was led by sophomore right side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) as he tallied a match-high 10 kills. Junior outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) finished with eight kills, six digs, five service aces, and a block. Junior setter Brandon Long (Hinckey/Metea Valley, Ill.) dished out 32 assists will freshman libero Aiden Kim (Bothell, Wash./North Creek) added eight digs. 

1st Set

  • BW earned the early 10-4 advantage before three unanswered points by the Terriers closed the gap. Three straight points by the Yellow Jackets forced Hiram to its first timeout (13-7).
  • Hiram took its second timeout of the set after BW scored four-straight to go up 18-9. The Yellow Jackets went on to claim set one, 25-16.

2nd Set

  • After being up just one point, the Yellow Jackets tallied four straight points topped off with a service ace by Beard, forcing a Terrier timeout (14-9)
  • A big kill in the middle by freshman Josh Steinitz (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) put BW up 17-10 late in set two, causing Hiram to burn its second timeout.
  • A kill by junior middle hitter Chris Moehl (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino) closed set two, 25-16. 

3rd Set

  • BW was hot to start the third set, going up 8-2 with three kills from junior outside hitter Nick Reilman (Medina/Walsh Jesuit).
  • The Terriers went on a 7-2 run to close the BW gap to just one point (10-9 BW).
  • Two kills by Beard and a kill by Reilman forced a Hiram timeout as the Yellow Jackets gained a 13-9 advantage.
  • A big kill by Devlin on the right side kept the Yellow Jackets up four points, leading 21-17, as they went on to win the set (25-21) and the match (3-0).

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 as they travel to Dallas, Pennsylvania for two-competition at Misericordia University. BW will face Medaille (N.Y.) University at 4:00 p.m. and Randolph-Macon (Va.) College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday inside the Anderson Center.
