Beard of Men's Volleyball Named MCVL Offensive Player of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball junior All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) was named the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. 

Beard, who earns his second offensive accolade this year, helped the Yellow Jackets go 2-0 last week against in conference play to improve to a 20-6 overall record and a 3-0 record in the MCVL. BW defeated Mount St. Joseph University in straight sets (25-15, 25-18, and 25-21) and Wittenberg University in straight sets (25-23, 25-19, and 25-21).

In the win over Mount St. Joseph, Beard totaled a match-high 16 kills and hit .441 on the day from the outside. He also notched a double-double, adding 12 digs. Beard added two service aces and two solo blocks.

Against Wittenberg, Beard again led all hitters with 16 kills and posted nine digs, three blocks, and an ace. On the week he averaged 5.33 kills per set, 3.50 digs per set, and hit .343 in the two matches. 

This season, Beard has posted 307 kills, 142 digs, 42 aces, 27 assists, and 30 blocks. In the MCVL, Beard leads in total kills, is second in kills per set (3.79), is second in service aces, and is third in service aces per set (0.52).

In his career, he leads the program with 746 kills, 383 digs, 76 aces, 73 blocks, and 52 assists. 

Beard was also named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Week on February 7, 2023. Last season he earned MCVL Defensive Player of the Week honors on February 1, 2022, and he was named MCVL Offensive Player of the Week for his first career accolade on February 25, 2021.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, March 21 as the team is on the road to face Adrian (Mich.) College in a reschedule MCVL matchup. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. inside of the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
