BW Men Defeat Marietta, 3-1

BEREA, Ohio- -  The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team tabbed its sixth win overall and its second Ohio Athletic Conference victory when it defeated Marietta College, 3-1, Saturday evening on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. 

In the first half, BW (6-7-1, 2-0-1 OAC) scored its first points five minutes into the game as senior Academic All-OAC forward Cody Smith (Brunswick) scored his fourth goal of the season off a cross from the top of the box from senior Academic All-OAC midfielder Michael Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) was credited on the assist. 

Marietta (4-7, 2-1 OAC) tied the game at 1-1 when Michael Nauls scored his second goal.  Wesley Riley was credited on the assist.

The Yellow Jackets answered back at the 7:42 mark with a header goal by senior defender Bill Gamble (Brunswick) for his first goal of the campaign to put BW up 2-1.  Minutes later, BW upped its lead to 3-1 when junior midfielder Aaron Harden (Mentor) scored his third goal of the season via an assist from junior forward Jared Abston (Strongsville).  The Yellow Jackets outshot the Pioneers, 12-5, in the first period, and had a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. 

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets defense kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard to hold on to a 3-1 victory.  Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Asbury (Cincinnati/ Turpin) tallied his fifth win this season and defended three shots inside the pipes. 

BW is back in action on Tuesday, October 14 when it travels to Alliance for an OAC game at the University of Mount Union at 7 p.m.  The next home match is on Friday, Oct. 17 when the team hosts Wilmington College in an OAC game at 7:30 p.m.
