No. 5 Baseball Corrals the Wolverines in Non-Conference Action

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The No. 5 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team cruised to victory over Grove City (Pa.) College in non-conference action by a final score of 13-1 (7 innings) on the R. Jack Behringer Field.

BW (15-4) was led by senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) who went 3-for-3 at the plate and belted two solo home runs. Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and six runs batted in. The Yellow Jackets offense combined for 13 runs on 18 hits.

Scoring Plays

  • BW got the offense going earlier in the first with a two-run double from Castillo to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to attack at the plate in the second inning with Mohnickey hitting his first home run of the day to centerfield.
  • In the third inning, senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) got the offense started RBI single.
  • Castillo followed that up with his second two-run double of the afternoon.
  • To close off the four run third inning, sophomore utility Joey Marousek (North Royalton) knocked in Castillo with a sacrifice fly.
  • Castillo came through again in the fourth inning with an RBI single.
  • Grove City (14-5) got on the board with an RBI single from Josh Minnich.
  • Mohnickey picked up his second home run of the game in the fifth to give BW a 9-1 lead.
  • Vonderhaar picked up another RBI in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
  • Castillo knocked in his sixth and final RBI with a groundout to short.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored every inning as they picked up RBI singles from senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) and junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) in the seventh.

On the Mound

  • Senior left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) got the start going five innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out six.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) pitched an inning in relief allowing one hit and striking out a pair.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) faced one batter and picked up a strikeout.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) went a third on inning allowing one hit and picking up a strikeout.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Clay Anderson (Broadview Heights/ Trinity) got the final out of the game with a flyout.

Beyond the Box Score

  • With a single in the first, sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) extended his hitting streak to 13 games. He only has one game this season without a hit.
  • Castillo extended his hitting streak to seven games with his double in the first.
  • After being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, Clark now holds the NCAA Division III lead for being hit by a pitch with 15.
  • With the win today, Baldis now is tied for the team lead with three wins on the season.
