No 8. Baseball Defeats Pitt-Bradford to Give Seniors’ Final Home Victory

BEREA, Ohio – The No.8-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team gave its senior class their final home victory as it defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 8-3, on Seniors' and Parents' Day on Heritage Field.

BW (29-8) scored one run in the first, two in the fifth, two in the seventh and put the game away with three in the eighth inning.  Pitt-Bradford (8-16-1) scored one run in the first and two in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

The Yellow Jackets scored eight runs and pounded out 13 hits.  Sophomore second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) led six BW hitters with five hits as he went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored and four runs-batted in (RBIs).

In addition, senior outfielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, three runs scored and a RBI.  Senior All-American first baseman/outfielder Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.   Freshman catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City / Jonathan Alter) went 2-for-three with a double and run scored.

On the mound, senior right-hander Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) made the start and pitched five and a third innings.  Waite allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.   Junior righty Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich. /Central) pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout.  Sophomore right-hander Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run on one hit with a strikeout and walk to record his second win of the season.

The Yellow Jackets end the regular season on Friday, May 1 when they travel to Bexley for a key Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Capital University on Clowson Field at 1 p.m.
