Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Thiel (Pa.) in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team hosted non-conference opponent Thiel College (Pa.) for the 2021 fall home opener to win in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-21, and 25-11.

BW improves to 3-3 overall while Thiel drops to 0-6 overall. The Yellow Jackets totaled 40 kills, 34 assists, and nine service aces. 

The Yellow Jackets got off to a quick start in set one on a serving run from senior Angela Dunn (Fairview Park/Fairview), who served five straight points and rattled off three service errors. The Yellow Jackets kept the momentum going the rest of the set, dominating game one 25-11. 

BW tallied 18 kills in the second set to take the game 25-21, before earning the victory in game three (25-11) to complete the sweep. The Yellow Jackets' defense forced a negative hitting percentage for the Tomcats, and BW tallied 47 digs and six total blocks as a team.

All-OAC performer and Academic All-OAC Cecelia Hamisch (Union/Northmont) led the Yellow Jackets with 11 total kills and three total blocks. Academic All-OAC Isa Luciano (Willoughby/South) tallied seven kills and four total blocks for BW. Freshman Sam Rueda (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) posted an eight kill total and added four digs.

Setter Lauren Reid (Canonsburg,Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned another double-double, tallying 27 assists and 10 digs. Reid also added four service aces for the Yellow Jackets. Lauren Gardner (Avon/Saint Joseph Academy) posted another double-digit dig count, totaling 15.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court this weekend as BW travels to the Penn State Behrend Invitational (Erie, Pa.) for a two-day tournament. The Yellow Jackets will face Bluffton University at 6:00 p.m. and Fredonia College (N.Y.) at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10.
