BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated NCAA Division II Catawba (N.C.) College, 5-4, and Elizabethtown (Pa.) College, 5-4, on the third day (Tuesday, March 9, 2010) of its annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Yellow Jackets wrap up their trip tomorrow.
Versus Catawba, the Yellow Jackets, now 3-5 overall, won two of three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) won 8-3 and the No. 3 team of senior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/Ashtabula Edgewood) and junior Katy Marshall (Medina/Senior) won 8-4.
In singles play, BW got victories from Pecinovsky in straight sets at No. 1, sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) in a super set tiebreaker at No. 2, and junior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) in straight sets at No. 4.
Versus Elizabethtown, BW fell behind 2-1 after doubles with Pecinovsky and Mittler earning the lone win, 9-7, at the first position. However, the Jackets were able to capture four of six singles matches. Pecinovsky won in straight sets at No. 1, Mittler won a super set tiebreaker at No. 3, Pelosi won in straight sets at No. 4, and junior Katy Marshall (Medina/Senior) won in a two-set tiebreaker at No. 6.
BW closes its spring trip with an 8:00 a.m. match versus Brevard (N.C). College tomorrow.
The first spring northern matches will take place on Saturday, March 20 when BW hosts a doubleheader against NCAA Division II Ashland University at 11:00 a.m. and then versus Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. All matches are played at the "Pop" Collins Courts on the BW campus.
