Women's Soccer Team Secures OAC Tourney Spot With Victory

NEW CONCORD, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team defeated Muskingum University, 6-2, today (Saturday, October 29, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Muskie Field. The Yellow Jackets were led by the foot of sophomore midfielder Hanna Cavalier (Chippewa Lake/Cloverleaf) as she scored two goals to tie for third on the team with four goals this season.
 
With the win, B-W improves to 11-8 overall and 4-5 in the OAC and will open OAC Tournament play on Tuesday against a team and at a time yet to be determined.  Please visit the OAC web site at www.oac.org for a complete tournament bracket with sites and match times.  With the loss, Muskingum finishes its season 5-14 overall and 1-8 in the OAC.   

B-W opened the scoring just 4:56 into the match when sophomore midfielder Heather Keller (Parma) scoredoff an assist from senior midfielder Lindsey Cooper (Westerville/ New Albany) for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Keller's fifth of the season to place her second of the team.

Undaunted, Muskingum answered back at the 8:57 mark when Emily Preston scored off an assist from Raven Francis to even the scored at 1-1.

Just three minutes later, Yellow Jacket senior forward Noelle Fox (Canfield) scored her fourth goal of the season at the 11:57 mark of the first half to give B-W a 2-1 lead. Cavalier was credited with the assist, her third assist of the season.

The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 3-1, when Cooper scored an unassisted goal at the 17:58 mark. This was her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Cavalier scored the final goal of the first half at the 27:02 mark to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 4-1.

In the second half, Cavalier opened the scoring with her second unassisted goal of the game at the 62:27 mark to give B-W a 5-1 advantage.

Muskingum than cut into the lead at the 73:07 mark when Francis scored to make the score 5-2. To put the game out of reach, junior forward Brigitte Petrash (Parma/ Normandy) scored her third goal of the season with just 53 second left in the match.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, freshman Gabrielle Bodo (Alliance/St. Thomas Aquinas) played the first half and freshman Claire LoPresti (Bethel Park, Pa.) played the second. Bodo recorded four saves while LoPresti had one.  With the win, Bodo improved her record to 7-7 on the season.

B-W outshot and outcornered Muskingum, 19-14, and 6-2, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season tied for fifth, and will play on the road on Tuesday November 1 in the OAC Quarterfinals. The semifinals are on Thursday, Nov. 3 and the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 5.
