Women Score Season-Best 91 Points By Defeating Marietta

BEREA, OHIO  – Sophomore forward Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills/Normandy) scored a career-high 12 points to lead five Baldwin-Wallace players in double figures as the Yellow Jackets defeated Marietta College, 91-59, today (Saturday, January 21, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game inside the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

The 91 points scored was a season-high and the most points scored by B-W since January 2, 2009 when it defeated Marietta by a final score of 94-78

With the victory, the Yellow improved to 10-7 overall, 5-5 in the OAC  and 7-0 at home while the Pioneers fall to, to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the OAC.

In addition to Simovic, who scored in double figures for the second straight game, for B-W, junior guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa/Corry Area) scored a season-high 11 points as she perfect from the floor on 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point land. Junior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Courthouse/Miami Trace) tallied 10 points and junior All-OAC forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) and sophomore guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) each contributed 10. Marietta was l   was led by freshman forward Candice Alexander with a game-high 14 points and junior forward Aleisha Guiler added 10.
 
The Yellow Jackets opened up the first half on a 13-4 run which was sparked by Coulter with eight points all coming on layups. Lairson scored on a fast break layup at 16:46 to force a Marietta timeout.
After the timeout, the Pioneers would go on a 7-1 run to cut the lead down to three points, 14-11, on a traditional three-point play from freshman forward Heather Booth at 12:48.
 
B-W would respond with a 7-0 run and push its lead back up to double figures, 21-11, on a trey by Lairson and jumpers from senior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) and Carpenter with the last coming with 11:19 remaining.
 
Marietta would go on a 6-3 run to cut the lead down to seven points, 24-17, on a layup by freshman guard Sierra Sigman at the 7:57 mark.
 
The Yellow Jackets would close out the half by outscoring the Pioneers, 27-12, to take a 22-point lead, 51-29, into the intermission.
 
B-W would extend its lead to as many as 34 points in the second half on the first career basket and points for freshman guard Jenny Prochko (Parma/Holy Name) with 1:22 remaining in the game. Marietta would come no closer than 20 points when Alexander converted the three-point play at 13:46.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 25 when they travel to Tiffin to play Heidelberg University in an OAC game in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is on Saturday, January 28 when B-W hosts Wilmington College in an OAC game in the Ursprung Gym at 2:00 p.m.  Fans can listen to both games live on campus radio station WBWC 88.3 FM "The Sting" or via the internet at www.wbwc.com.  The pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tipoff.  

Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise two men's and women's basketball doubleheaders on regional cable network SportsTime Ohio. The games are the January 28 doubleheader versus Wilmington and the February 18 twinbill versus Ohio Northern University. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.
