Softball Team Drops OAC Doubleheader To Capital

BEXLEY, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team fell to Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Wednesday, April 11, 2012) by scores of 7-1 and 2-1 at Clowson Field.

With the losses, the Yellow Jackets snapped a four-game winning streak and now have a record of 15-11 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.  The Crusaders improved to 20-9 overall and 5-2 in the OAC.

In game one, Capital freshman pitcher Alyssa Patznick recorded the one-hit victory as the Crusaders won by a final score of 7-1.  The Crusaders would score at least one run in every inning except the first when they were held scoreless.

B-W broke up the perfect game for Patznick in the top of the sixth inning when senior second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion) reached second base on an error by the centerfielder.  Finley would score the lone run of the game as she crossed the plate when sophomore centerfielder Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) reached first on the throwing error by the pitcher.
Sophomore designated player/pitcher Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field) broke up the no-hit bid for Patznick as she led off the top of the seventh inning with a base hit to right field.
On the mound, two Yellow Jacket pitchers allowed seven runs (four earned) on 12 hits.

In game two, Capital took an early lead as it scored one run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning.

B-W tied the game in the top of the third inning as it scored one run on two hits.   Finley led off the inning with a bloop single.  Finley would advance to third on two straight ground outs and would score on the RBI single by freshman shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge).

The Crusaders regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning when they scored one run on four hits.

The Yellow Jacket offense scored one run on three hits led by Lightel with two hits and Finley with one.

On the mound, sophomore Justina Wise (New London) suffered the loss as she pitched six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.

B-W will return to the friendly confines of the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field on Saturday, April 14 when it will welcome the Quakers of Wilmington College for an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
