Yellow Jackets Lose Twice to Visiting Ohio Wesleyan in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost a doubleheader to visiting Ohio Wesleyan University today (Tuesday, March 24, 2009) at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea. The Battling Bishops won the first game, 8-1 in five innings, and captured the nightcap with a come-from-behind, 8-4, win

With its two losses, B-W falls to 10-6 overall.  With its sweep, OWU improves to 11-5-1 overall.

In the first game, OWU gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning and BW came back to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame when junior second baseman Lauren Sabolik (Strongsville) had a one-out single, moved to second when junior leadoff hitter Mallory Kobak (Independence) bunted for a hit, moved to third via an OWU error and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference and All-Central Region catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland).  But that was as close as B-W would get as the Bishops scored twice in the fourth and six more in the fifth to apply the eight-run mercy rule on the Yellow Jackets.

Despite the loss, Kobak led B-W with a pair of base hits and her 19th stolen bases in 21 attempts and Sabolik and freshman pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic), this week's OAC Pitcher of the Week, had the Jackets other two hits. Baker took the loss on the mound and fell to 5-3 overall.

In the second game, B-W jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 after five innings and before OWU began its comeback.  The Battling Bishops scored seven times in the sixth to take the lead. With the score tied 4-4 in the sixth and the bases loaded, OWU's Emily Bishop slammed a grand slam homerun to break the game open and give the battling Bishops an 8-4 advantage.  For the twinbill, OWU had five homers by five different players, including three in the first game.

Offensively, Kobak, junior leftfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland) and senior first baseman Caitlyn Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria/ Senior) each had a pair of hits. Kobak also stole two more bases and now has 21 this season.  On the mound, sophomore Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) started and took the loss to fall to 4-3 overall. Baker relieved Rohrbacher in the fateful sixth and allowed the tie-breaking and game-winning grand slam.

The Yellow Jackets return to action and open OAC play on Saturday, March 28 when they travel to Alliance to take on arch-rival Mount Union in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
