Five Men's Volleyball Players Named Academic All-MCVL

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Five Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball student-athletes have been named to the 2022 Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) Academic All-Conference team.

In order to receive this academic achievement award, student-athletes must have at least a 3.3 grade point-average and have earned a varsity letter.

This year's recipients include sophomore All-MCVL outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby), freshman setter Evan Herbst (Hamburg, N.Y.), freshman utility player Carson Junker (Massillon/Jackson), sophomore setter Brandon Long (Hinckley, Metea Valley, Ill.), and freshman hitter Tom Zagrobelny (East Aurora, N.Y.).

Beard, who receives his second Academic All-MCVL accolade, is also the only student-athlete in program history to be recognized as an All-MCVL player. Beard finished as the team leader and fifth in the MCVL in kills per set (3.06) and sixth in total kills (266). He also was second on the team in digs with 148 digs, second on the team in blocks with 29, third on the team in service aces with 24, and added 12 assists. He recorded his career-high in a 24-kill performance this year in the five-set loss to Adrian, where he also notched 15 digs.

Long, who also receives his second consecutive Academic All-MCVL honor, competed in all 26 matches for the Yellow Jackets this spring. Long averaged 8.83 assists per set and notched 123 total digs. He totaled 777 assists this season and surpassed 1,000 career assists. Long also added 32 service aces, 22 total blocks, and 19 kills.

Herbst, who earns his first career accolade, appeared in seven matches this season, totaling 41 assists and four digs. Junker, who also receives his first academic accolade, played in 14 matches in the 2022 campaign. Junker played the majority of his sets from the middle hitter position, totaling 38 kills, 28 blocks, and 12 service aces. Zagrobelny, who also receives his first MCVL accolade, played in 18 matches for BW. Zagrobelny tallied 50 kills, 25 digs, and 12 blocks.

The 2022 men's volleyball team concluded the second inagural season on April 2.
