BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University junior thrower Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) has been named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Patrick will receive his award at a banquet Wednesday night prior to competing in this weekend's (May 21-23) NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at Marietta College.
This season, Patrick was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Sparky Adams Field Event Athlete of the Yearfor his performance at the 2009 OAC Outdoor Championships. He won the shot put and placed second in the hammer and discus throws, earning All-OAC status in all three events.
During the indoor season, Patrick placed second in the shot put and third in the weight throw exhibition at the 2009 OAC Indoor Championships. He was also named OAC Field Event Athlete of the Week on March 23 for his performance at the BW Greater Cleveland Colleges Meet where he won the shot put and placed second in the weight throw.
Patrick has qualified for this weekend's NCAA Division III National Championship Meet in both the shot put and discus events. Heading into the meet, he ranks sixth in Division III in the shot put (54'0") and 12th in the discus (162'6"). The discus event will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and the shot put will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
