Men’s Tennis Competes at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team competed in its second fall event as it competed this past weekend at the two-day Oberlin College Invitational on the Don Hunsinger Tennis Courts. 

BW (1-0) was led in singles play by senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Jake Liebler (Medina) and sophomores Roger Boyer (Medina/Brunswick) and Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) as all three posted records of 2-0. 

Liebler won his first match against Alex Guthrie of John Carroll University by scores of 7-5, 1-6 and 10-3.  He closed out the singles tournament with a 6-2 and 6-4 victory against Cooper Miller of Allegheny (Pa.) College. 

Boyer earned a 7-5 and 6-3 opening match victory against Craig Deng of the College of Wooster.  He then defeated Niall Kneerim of Allegheny by a pro-set score of 8-2.  

Harris won his first match by scores of 6-3, 0-6 and 10-3 against Mike Siegel of Allegheny.  He closed out his day with a 6-3 and 7-5 victory against Will Andres of Allegheny. 

In addition, senior Academic All-OAC player Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley), senior Brian Carano (Akron/Revere), sophomore All-OAC player Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and freshman Jake Elbin (Findlay) all earned a victory apiece.

In doubles play, the Yellow Jackets were led by the team of Katz and Liebler as the duo went 3-0.  Harris and Polifrone as well as Boyer and junior Alex Papke (Federal Way, Wash./Thomas Jefferson each won a pair of matches.

Katz and Liebler won their first match by a score of 8-3 against Will Andres and Cooper Miller of Allegheny.  The duo then defeated Niall Kneerim and Derek Sawer of Allegheny by an 8-1 count.  The team ended the tournament with 9-7 victory against Brad Stawser and Sherwin Miranda of NCAA Division II University of Findlay.

Harris and Polifrone beat Nathan Devereux and Andrew Long of Wooster by a score of 8-3.  The tandem then defeated Matthew Gittings and Will Katzman of Oberlin by a count of 8-2. 

Boyer and Papke earned an 8-4 victory against Mike Siegel and Ewan Malenfant of Allegheny in their first match.   The team closed out the tournament with an 8-3 decision against Kneerim and Sawer of Allegheny.

BW ends the fall portion of its schedule on Friday-Sunday, September 23-30 when it travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Central Region Championships hosted by Kalamazoo College.
