Men's Soccer Team Defeats Westminster (Pa.), 3-2, in New Wilmington

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated Westminster College, 3-2, today (Saturday, September 26, 2009) in the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. The victory was B-W's fourth straight.

With its win, B-W is now 4-5 overall and next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 29 when the Yellow Jackets host St. Vincent (Pa.) College at 7:00 p.m. in the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader on the Tressel Field pitch at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. With its loss, Westminster is now 5-5 overall.

B-W built leads of 2-0 in the first half and 2-1 at halftime and led 3-1 early in the second half before Westminster scored t close to within 3-2 at the 76:57 mark. The B-W defense then held the Titans the rest of the way to earn the win.

The Yellow Jackets scored the opening goal of the match by sophomore forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) at the 19:45 mark with the assist by senior midfielder Jeff Bonezzi (Medina/ Senior).  B-W gained a 2-0 lead at the 20:32 mark when junior forward Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) scored his second goal of the season via an assist by junior midfielder Jeff Grater (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls).  A Westminster goal at the 23:14 mark made t 2-1 in favor of the Jackets at halftime.

In the second half, Vandendriessche scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season with an assist from sophomore defender Andy Thompson (Huron) at the 48:02 mark for a 3-1 lead.

Overall, the the Yellow Jackets outshot the Titans, 19-6, and B-W outcornered Westminster, 5-4.

In goal for B-W, senior Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) played all 90 minutes, faced six Titan shots, made three saves and allowed a pair of goals.  

Following its match against St. Vincent on Sept. 29, BW plays next Saturday, October 3 when it opens 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference action against Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio at 12:00 p.m.
