BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 3-1, tonight (Saturday October 25, 2008) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Seniors' Night in Berea. The men's game was the nightcap of a women's and men's Seniors' Night doubleheader.
With its win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-5 overall and 2-5 in the OAC. With its loss, Marietta drops to 8-5-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the OAC.
B-W opened the scoring at the 27:13 mark when freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls). The score would remain 1-0 for the remained of the half. The Yellow Jackets scored another goal by freshman defender Andy Thompson (Huron), his first of his college career, via an assist from senior midfielder Mike Grater (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) at the 80:09 mark. The scoring continued when, at the 82:17 mark when sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) scored his sixth goal. Marietta scored their only goal with seven minutes left in the game when senior midfielder Seita Kawamoto put one in unassisted. This very intense game saw an astonishing seven yellow cards.
In goal for B-W, junior Russ Mika (Medina/Senior) played all 90 minutes and made six saves, while allowing one goal. Mika's record is now 7-3 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets won the battle of shots, 18-12, and corner kicks, 5-4.
B-W returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets end the regular season on Friday, Oct. 31 when they host Wilmington College at Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
