BW Men Beat Wilmington, 71-58

WILMINGTON, OHIO – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored 21 points and two-time All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 20 points as the Baldwin-Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 71-58, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Fred Razik Arena.
 
With its win, BW is 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the OAC and broke a three-game losing streak. The big key for the Yellow Jackets was outrebounding the Quakers, 45-30, including grabbing 17 offensive caroms. With its loss, Wilmington is 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
 
In addition to Krakowiak and Payne for BW, junior guard Justin Roth (Parma) had 11 points. Wilmington was led by sophomore guard Dwight Johnson's 14 points and junior forward Malcolm Heard II had 11.
 
Wilmington got off to an early, 6-2 lead at the 17:59 mark when Johnson made two foul shots. The Quakers increased their lead to eight points at 17-9 at 9:52 when Heard made two charity tosses.

BW cut the deficit to two points twice with the last at 19-17 with 7:59 left when Payne made a layup. Undaunted, Wilmington came right back to go on a 14-7 run to lead by a high of nine points at 33-24 with 2:11 left when Heard made a layup. BW came right back to score the final eight points of the half, including a three-pointer by junior guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) with one second left to trail 33-32 at the intermission.

In the second half, Wilmington increased its lead to 35-32 when Johnson made a layup at 19:51, but BW came right back with a 6-2 run to take itas first lead at 38-37 when junior forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) made a three-pointer. After Wilmington tied the score at 39-39, BW went on a 10-0 run to lead 49-49 at 10:21 when Krakowiak made one of two foul shots following a Wilmington technical foul. The run continued as BW ultimately outscored the Quakers 23-7 for a 62-46 lead with 2:43 remaining when Payne scored on a tip in.

The closest Wilmington would get after that point was seven points at 65-58 with 44 seconds left. BW closed out the win by making its last six foul shots.
 
BW is back in action on Monday, Dec. 17 when it hosts Olivet (Mich.) College in a non-league game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m. BW ends its pre-Christmas schedule on Thursday, Dec. 20 when it hosts the University of Mount Union in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
