Men's Basketball Team Falls To Hiram, 74-72, on Last Second Putback
BEREA, OHIO --  Junior forward Chris Meyer rebounded a missed shot and scored the winning points with one second remaining as the Hiram College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 74-72, tonight (Sunday, November 28, 2010) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

Meyer scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for Hiram, now 3-2 overall. He was joined in double figures by senior forward Hassan Muhammed with a team-high 22 points and senior guard Deon Milton had 16 points, including 13 in the first half.  BW, now 1-3 overall, was led by freshman Kyle Payne (
Brunswick) with a game and career-high 25 points. He was joined by sophomore forward Chris Ameen (BroadviewHeights/ Walsh Jesuit) with 11 markers.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 18:05 mark when Ameen scored on a layup following a perfectly executed out-of-bounds play. The lead grew to 14-4 at the 16:01 mark when Payne made a driving layup.
 
The Terriers came right back with a 10-0 run to tie the score at 14-14 at the 11:54 mark before sophomore guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) gave the lead back to BW at 16-14 with two foul shots at the 11:27 mark. Hiram gained its first lead at 17-16 with 11:01 left when Milton made a three-pointer. He extended the lead to 19-16 at 10:34 when he grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. Milton continued his assault at the 9:48 mark by canning another trey to build the Terrier lead to 22-16.
 
Following a dunk by Hiram's Meyer for a 24-16 lead at 8:58, BW received a layup from Ameen and two foul shots at 7:58 from senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) to close the gap to 24-20.  BW got as close as two points at 28-26 at 5:27 when Payne made a layup, but Hiram outscored the Yellow Jackets 10-5 to build its lead back to seven points, at 38-31, with 2:09 left when Milton made a three-pointer. BW closed the gap to 38-33 at halftime as sophomore forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) made a jumper at 1:42 to close out the scoring

In the second half, Hiram pushed its lead back to seven points at 42-35 with 18:11 left when senior guard Chris Roberts made a layup. BW went on a 6-0 run to close to one point again at 42-41 when freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made two foul shots via a technical foul and junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) then made two more at the 17:35 mark.
 
Hiram then had a 6-0 run of its own to push the lead back to seven points at 48-41 with 16:25 left when Roberts made a layup. Undaunted, BW went on its own 7-0 run to tie the game at 48-all with 15:06 left when Payne canned a three-pointer.
 
After ties at 50-50 and 52-52, Cabbil gave BW the lead at 54-52 with 12:54 left when he made two foul shots. Following a tie at 54-54, Payne reached his career-high by making two foul shots at 12:32 for a 56-54 lead. The advantage grew to 58-54 at 12:04 when junior guard Matt Triana (North East, Pa./ North East) scored on a layup following a steal and to 60-54 at 10:49 when he made another steal and layup.
 
Hiram continued to battle and outscored BW 11-6 to close to one point at 66-65 with 5:18 left when Meyer made a layup, but a long distance trey by Payne at 4:49 pushed the lead back to four points at 69-65. The Terriers cut the lead to 69-67 with 3:33 left when Meyer made two foul shots, and they took the lead at 70-69 when junior guard Andrew Weigand made a three-pointer at 2:13. BW came back to tie the score at 70-70 when sophomore guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made one foul shot at 1:46.
 
Meyer gave Hiram back the lead at 72-70 with 40 seconds left when he made a layup, but Meeder tied it again at 72-72 when he made a layup with 15 seconds remaining.

Hiram then set up for the game-winning shot. Weigand missed an open jumper at the foul line, but Meyer grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the game-winner.

The Yellow Jackets open 2010-11 Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, December 1 against rival
HeidelbergUniversity in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
