Capital Men's Basketball Team Beats Baldwin Wallace, 74-60, in Columbus

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard DJ Frazier scored a game-high 24 points as the Capital University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin Wallace University, 74-60, today (Saturday, February 6, 2010) in the Capital Center in Columbus. 

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the OAC for a split in the season series. With their loss, the Yellow Jackets drop to 12-9 overall and 7-7 in the OAC.  

In addition to Frazier for Capital, junior forward Scott Robertson scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and freshman forward Spencer Niekamp had 10 points. BW was led by junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) with 11 points. 

In the first half, the Crusaders jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 17:29 mark when Robertson made a layup. The Capital lead swelled to a high of 10 points at 13-3 with 14:10 left when freshman forward Spencer Niekamp made a three-pointer. BW then went on a 22-15 run to close to within three points at 28-25 with 2:27 left before the intermisson when sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) made a layup. Capital led at halftime, 34-31.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets came out to take their first lead of the game at 35-34 with 18:45 left in the game when senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior)scored on a fast-break layup. The lead reached three points at 37-34 with 17:39 left when senior All-OAC forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) made a jumper. Undaunted, Capital then went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 42-37 with 15:19 remaining when Frazier made a three-pointer.

The Crusaders continued to built their lead to 12 points at 51-39 with 12:25 left when Frazier canned another three-pointer to complete a 17-2 run. The Yellow Jackets then closed to within 10 points at 59-49 with 7:22 left when Glass made a hook shot, was fouled and then completed the three-point play by making the foul shot.  Again undaunted, Capital scored the next four points to regain a 14-point lead at 63-49 with 5:57 left. The Crusader lead then grew to 15 points at 66-51 with 2:47 left when senior guard Ben McGrath made two doul shots.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, February 10 when they travel to Alliance to play OAC-rival Mount Union College in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex at 7:30 p.m.  Next Saturday, February 13, when BW hosts Muskingum University, the game is designated as Al Sirat Grotto Day with partial gate proceeds going to the Monarch's Scholarship fund. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
