BW Football Loses to Otterbein, 20-9, in OAC Clash

BEREA, Ohio –  The Baldwin Wallace University football team surrendered 20 unanswered points and fell to Otterbein University by a final score of  20-9 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game before 4,559 fans on a sun-drenched Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Professor Appreciation Day.

BW (4-3, 3-3 OAC) led 6-0 after one quarter, 9-0 at halftime and 9-6 after three quarters.  The Cardinals (5-2, 5-1 OAC), who have now won three straight against the Yellow Jackets and their fifth win the last seven years, had a 334-294 advantage in total offense including a 243-170 advantage through the air.

The BW offense was led by junior quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas) as he completed 11 of 27 passes for 170 yards. He also ran for 11 times for 43 yards with a touchdown. The ground game was led by junior running back Isaac Reed III (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh) with 11 carries for 53 yards. The defense was led by junior linebacker Tyler Burdorff (Painesville/ Riverside) with 10 tackles.

The Otterbein offense was led by senior QB Brick Davis who completed 21 of 37 for 243 yards and a TD. The ground game was led by sophomore RB Reid Hutchison with 14 carries for 66 yards. The receiving corps were led by senior WR's Ryan Thombs and Cole Benner and Travis Laird. Thombs caught a game-high five passes for 54 yards, Benner grabbed four balls for 50 yards with a TD, and Laird had four grabs for 49 yards. Sophomore WR Logan Stepp also caught five passes for 45 yards. The defense was led by senior linebacker Preston Pearson with a game-high 11 tackles.

In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets took a 6-0 lead when Moeglin scored on a six-yard, but a low snap on the point-after-touchdown kick (PAT) was low and the subsequent run failed. The score came after Dunne returned a Cardinal punt 53 yards to set up the BW offense at the Otterbein seven yard line.

In the second quarter, BW increased its lead to 9-0 with 2:40 left in the half when sophomore placekicker Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) made a 25-yard field goal, his fifth in five attempts this season. The kick came after Otterbein botched a snap on a punt attempt for a 29-yard loss deep in its own territory.

In the third quarter, Otterbein cut the deficit  to 9-3 at 8:35 when senior kicker Alana Gaither booted a 23-yard field goal. The boot capped a 12-play and 52-yard drive in 3:55. Gaither added a second field goal at 3:10 to continue to cut the deficit to 9-6. The boot capped a 7-play and 61-yard drive in 4:23.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals finally gained the lead at 13-9 at 12:15 when junior RB John Pyles scored on an 8-yard run and Gaither added the PAT kick. The score capped a 10-play and 78-yard drive in 4:21. Otterbein's lead grew to 20-9 at 7:31 when Davis threw a 12-yard TD pass to Benner and Gaither added the kick. The score capped an 8-play and 60-yard drive in 3:52.

The Yellow Jackets returns to action next Saturday, November 1 when it travels to Columbus to play Capital University in an OAC game at Bernlohr Stadium at 2 p.m. The final BW home game is on Saturday, November 8 when the team hosts No.3-ranked the University of Mount Union at Finnie Stadium on Seniors' & Parents' Day at 1:30 p.m.
