No. 9 Baseball Defeats Wooster in Non-Conference Showdown

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 9 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team hosted The College of Wooster in a non-conference single game on Fisher Field. The Yellow Jackets' (15-3) team offense with four homeruns led them to a big 12-1 victory over the Fighting Scots (8-5).

BW was led by senior left fielder Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School) as he hit two homeruns, hitting 3-4 from the plate with five RBIs and three runs.

Scoring Plays

  • BW got the jump in the bottom of the second as freshman third baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) hit a solo homerun over the left field fence
  • Also in the second, with junior designated hitter Bryce Holt (Richfield/Revere) on second (reached on a double to right center field), Kamalipour also homered over left field to make it 3-0 BW
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied three more runs (6-0) in the third, highlighted by an RBI single to centerfield from Kolenich, an RBI double by junior second baseman Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) to left center, and an RBI single by junior All-OAC first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen)
  • In the fourth, BW extended its lead to 7-0 on an RBI single to left field by senior All-OAC right fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), scoring junior centerfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate)
  • Wooster tallied a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double down the left field line
  • BW went up 10-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run homerun over left center field by Kamalipour
  • A solo homerun by Vonderhaar over the left field fence earned BW the 11-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied one more run in the seventh on an RBI groundout to first base
  • BW went on to win 12-1 as the Fighting Scots were scoreless through the last two innings

On the Mound

  • Senior right hander Garrett Miller (McMurray) started and earned the win (1-0), throwing five innings, allowing one run on two hits, and totaled two strikeouts
  • Senior right hander Steve Spidell (Mount Eaton/Wayneville) came in to relieve and notches the save, pitching the last four innings as he allowed no runs on two hits, and posted three strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets return to play Saturday, April 2 as they host Muskingum University in an OAC doubleheader. First pitch for the first game is set for 1:00 p.m., with the second game to follow, on Fisher Field.
