Women's Soccer Falls to Capital in OAC Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team fell to Capital University in their first glimpse of Ohio Athletic Conference action this season, by a final score of 4-1 on Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium.

Tonight's first half confirmed the beginning of OAC action with a very chippy style of play. Both teams were strong on the ball, and used their bodies to physically impose their will on their adversaries. BW (7-5) used tonight's rigid atmosphere to score the match's first goal in the 40th minute. Sophomore defender Anna Wenzinger (Columbus, Bishop Watterson) aggressively pressured the Capital (8-3) keeper into a blocked kick attempt by speeding through the middle of the field to chase a thru ball. The ball then trickled into the open net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the Yellow Jackets.

The Crusaders responded quickly in the second half when senior Carlee Murry received a pass from senior Jordan Fike, made a cut to the middle and shot the ball in the bottom right corner of the net to the tie the game at one apiece in the 51st minute. Capital then scored two goals less than a minute apart. First, in the 72nd minute, Fike scored on a free kick to give the Crusaders the lead. Then, senior Maggie Peddicord netted a goal off a lengthy throw-in from sophomore Cassidy Ryan to increase the lead to 3-1. Capital then added an insurance goal roughly seven minutes later when freshman Aaliyah Brletic scored, along with another assist being credited to Fike.

BW senior goalkeeper Emma Bruno (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) made 11 saves on 15 shots faced in 82:10 of action, dropping her record to 7-3 on the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Lyndsey Valentine (Springboro) made her first appearance between the pipes this season, logging approximately eight minutes of action, while facing zero shots on goal.

The Yellow Jackets return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 9 when they host OAC opponent Ohio Northern University ay 7:00 p.m. on Tressel Field.
