Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Oberlin on Seniors’ Day

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team spilt a non-conference and Seniors' Day doubleheader with Oberlin College on the BW Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

Between the first and second game, the University honored and recognized five senior student-athletes in infielder Grace Bowman (New Windsor, Md./Linganore), All-Ohio Athletic Conference catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark), Academic All-OAC center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermillion/Firelands), infielder Ana LaGuardia (Medina) and All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights).

In game one, BW (20-14) scored one run on one hit as it plated the game winning run on a fielder's choice run batted-in by Coggins in the bottom of the seventh.   Oberlin (6-24) was held scoreless on three hits.

At the Plate

  • Mau went 1-for-3

In the Circle

  • Junior right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her 10th game of the season as she did not allow a run on three hits with eight strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs on 10 hits as they plated two in the first on the two-run blast by sophomore third baseman Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark), three in the fifth and two in the sixth.   The Yeowomen scored nine runs on 12 hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the second, third and sixth innings and erupted for six runs in the seventh.

At the Plate

  • Freshman left fielder Addison Siedler (Mentor) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases
  • Freshman short stop Courtney Stewart (Clinton/Chippewa) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, run batted-in (RBI) and two stolen bases
  • Smearman went 2-for-3 with a homerun, run scored and three RBIs

In the Circle

  •  Junior righty Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) suffered the loss as she allowed six runs (three earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts and two walks
  • Mau made her collegiate pitching debut to start the seventh inning and she allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit with a walk.

BW closes out the regular season portion of its schedule on Friday, May 3 when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against crosstown rival John Carroll University at 3 p.m.
