BW Men’s Tennis Team Shuts Out Marietta, 9-0

MARIETTA, OHIO -- The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 9-0, today (Saturday, April 27, 2013) in a season-ending OAC match at the Beren Tennis Center. The shutout was the 10th this season for the Yellow Jackets.

With the win, BW ends its season 23-1 overall and 8-1 in the OAC, and finished in second place in the season standings.  The Yellow Jackets have won 52 of their last 53 regular season dual matches, including a 29-match streak a year ago and a 20-match streak this season.  Marietta drops to 8-8 overall and 3-6 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets led, 3-0, after doubles play and won all six singles matches.

Highlighting the singles action for BW was All-OAC No. 1 senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated freshman Ashton Whiteleather, 6-0 and 6-2, to improve to 24-3 this season and 96-11 for his career, nine wins shy of all-time leader James Daly (2005-08), who won a school-record 105 matches during his career.

In addition in singles,  All-OAC No. 2 sophomore Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) beat freshman Alex Schaeffer, 6-0 and 6-0, to up his season record to 24-5.  No. 3 freshman Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) defeated senior Teddy Daub, 6-2 and 6-1, and climbed to 26-3.  Academic All-OAC No. 4 senior Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) beat senior Andy Knauff, 6-0 and 6-0, and improved to 21-3.  No. 5 freshman Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated sophomore Karl Grant, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 and 1-0 (10-8), upping his season record to 22-6.  At No. 6, freshman Zach Elbin (Findlay/ Senior) beat Tanner Sigmon, 6-3 and 6-2, to improve to 5-2.

In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Harris and Ganim beat Whiteleather and Schaeffer, 8-4, and improved their season record to 21-9.  At No. 2 doubles, Patterson and Minrovic defeated Daub and Grant, 8-1, and climbed to 19-5.  At No. 3, Horvath and Kearney beat Knauff and freshman Tanner Sigman, 8-0, and ended their season at 19-0.

Horvath ends his doubles career 88-19 and when combined with his 96-11 singles mark gives him 184 career combination wins to rank second all-time at the University.  Kearney ends his career 68-15 in singles play at BW and 85-15 overall as he transferred to BW following his freshman season at the University of Mount Union. He also had a 47-11 doubles mark at BW and a 61-14 career mark.

The win improves 24th-year head coach Brian Rector's career record to 437-85 with an .837 winning percentage.  Rector is the winningest men's tennis coach at any level throughout the state of Ohio.

A year ago, BW finished 29-1 overall, had a school-record 29 wins and 29-match winning streak, won both the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
