Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Defiance in Thrilling Overtime Victory

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Defiance College 2-1 in overtime on the Winsper-Knobel Field. 

The first half was controlled by BW (3-3) as they outshot Defiance by a mark of 10-5. BW got the offense going right away with a shot from junior forward Shaheen Ghahremani (Streetsboro). BW got another great look in front of the net from senior midfielder Attila Nagy Jr. (Lakewood). Throughout the half, BW got 4 shots on goal to Defiance's one shot on goal. The half ended tied at 0.

Defiance took control early in the second half with a penalty kick goal from Joshua Maurer at around the 50-minute mark. BW was able to hold off another Defiance shot with a save. BW then got on offense and didn't miss their opportunity. Freshman midfielder Tommy Buser (Akron/Revere) booted one into the back of the net. The rest of the half saw both teams get chances, but neither could finish, and the game went into overtime tied at 1.

In overtime, both teams got two shots each. Defiance opened the period with two headers but could not finish. Nagy got another look, but Defiance got the save. Less than a minute later, sophomore midfielder Alex Gibson (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) got a chance, and he didn't miss. Gibson put it past the keeper to end the game in a 2-1 BW victory.

In the net for BW, freshman goalkeeper Zoltan Nagy (Lakewood/St. Edward) recorded seven shots on the eight shots he faced. 

BW returns to action on Saturday, September 18 in the second game of a home non-conference double header against Waynesburg (Pa.). Then on Sunday, September 19 they host non-conference Olivet (Mich.) at a to be determined time.
