ADA, OHIO -- Junior midfielder Kirk Graf (Ashland) and sophomore defender Trey Arney (Coshocton) each scored goals and senior goalie Ryan Hulings (Centerville) tossed a shutout as the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team beat Defiance College, 2-0, today (Saturday, September 8, 2012) in the final match of the Ohio Northern University Tournament on the ONU Soccer Field in Ada.
With its victory, BW is 3-1 overall and has won three straight matches. Defiance is 0-4 overall. The Yellow Jackets had a 2-0 mark at the tourney as they also beat 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University, 5-3, on Friday (Sept. 7).
In the first half, Graf gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead at the 4:33 mark when he received a free kick following a penalty and yellow card on a Defiance defender. The goal was the eighth of Graf's career. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, BW extended its lead to 2-0 at the 49:36 mark when Arney scored on a header from sophomore forward Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere).
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced Earlham five shots, including three on-goal, and had three saves. Hulings improves to 2-0 this season. Defiance netminder junior Sean Roberts faced 13 BW shots, including eight on-goal, allowed both goals and made six saves
In the game, the Yellow Jackets outshot the Defiance Yellow Jackets, 13-5, and won the corner kick battle, 4-0.
Next week, the BW men travel to University Circle to play Cleveland cross-town and non-league rival Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and then opens its 2012 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 15 against Grove City College of Pennsylvania at 1:00 p.m. in the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader. The women kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, October 9, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg University in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO). This is the fifth straight year that BW has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a 7-1 combined record on the line, including a 4-0 mark by the women.
