ONEONTA, NEW YORK – Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team ended a successful season after falling, 2-1, to host SUNY Oneonta today (Saturday, November 12, 2011) in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. This was B-W's first-ever trip to the NCAA tourney.
With the win, Oneonta is now 15-2-2 overall and advances to play Penn-State Behrend in tomorrow's East Regional final at 1:00 p.m. With its loss, B-W finishes its season at 16-6 overall. The 16 victories represents a single-season school-record.
The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 1-0 lead when senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron) scored on a free kick from 35 yards out at the 4:38 mark.
Oneonta came back to tie the match at 1-1 at the 32:26 mark when Nicholas Lange scored via a penalty kick.
Oneonta won the game at the 38:26 mark when Eric Fortler scored the game-winner off the cross from Matthew Brown. There was no scoring in the second half.
In net for B-W, junior Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced 6 Red Dragon shots, allowed two goals and made four saves as he ends his season at 16-4. For Oneonta, Max Siegelman faced 6 Yellow Jacket shots, allowed only one and made five saves as he improved his record to 14-1-2.
The Red Dragons outshot the Yellow Jackets, 16-12, and bested the Yellow Jackets in corner kicks, 11-1.
