Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Capital to Stay Perfect in OAC

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team held off Capital University to stay perfect in Ohio Athletic Conference play by a final score of 15-13 inside Bernlohr Stadium. 

Freshman midfielder Trevor Stevens (Buffalo, N.Y./Lancaster) led BW (11-1, 8-0 OAC) with a career-best six goals. Freshman midfielder Jake Nanosky (Medina) added three goals. Freshman midfielder Hunter Boehm (Delaware/Olentangy) scored two goals. Sophomore attacker/midfielder Kyler Byerly (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored a goal and tallied six assists for a career-best seven points. 

Capital (6-5, 2-5 OAC) was led by sophomore midfielder Brenden Pelton who scored four goals. Sophomore attacker Jake Belt scored three goals and added an assist. Junior midfielder Nathan Mork, junior attacker Jack Scharner, and sophomore attacker Evan Frund each scored two goals. Scharner added five assists and Mork tallied one assist. 

The Yellow Jackets started the scoring with a goal coming by the way of Stevens with 11:27 remaining. The Crusaders responded with a 2-0 run to take the lead when Belt scored his first goal of the day. The BW attack was able to pressure the Capital defense and end the quarter on a 3-0 run that was capped off by Stevens to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-2 lead.

Stevens picked right back up where he left off scoring the first goal in the second quarter with 13:58 remaining. The Crusaders came cruising back with a 3-0 run when Belt scored to tie things up 5-5. Nanosky scored two quick goals to retake the lead for BW with 7:56 remaining in the half. Pelton responded with his own 2-0 run for Capital to tie things up at 7-7. The Yellow Jackets ended the half with one last goal to take an 8-7 lead into halftime when senior midfielder Jimmy Brown (Canfield/Cardinal Mooney) rifled one past the keeper. 

The Crusaders tied things up right after halftime with a goal coming by the way of Scharner with 14:04 remaining in the third. Byerly responded for BW to retake the lead with 12:40 remaining. Capital was able to retake the lead going on a 2-0 with 9:18 left in the third when Belt scored a man-down goal. The Yellow Jackets would not let them pull away going on their own 2-0 run to retake the lead 11-10 when senior midfielder Ethan Miller (Delaware/Hayes) rifled one past the keeper. Capital tied the game up for the last time when Mork hit the back of the cage with 3:48 remaining. BW ended the third quarter with one last goal coming by Stevens off an assist from Byerly to take a 12-11 lead into the final stanza. 

The Yellow Jackets expanded their lead starting off on a 2-0 run that was capped off by Nanosky. The Crusaders trimmed the BW lead down to two with a man-up goal by Mork with 4:51 remaining. The Yellow Jackets added one last goal when Stevens ripped one into the back of the cage with 3:34 remaining. Capital ended the scoring in the game with a Pelton goal to trim the BW led to 15-13. The Yellow Jackets held the Crusaders off the rest of the way to take home the victory. 

In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Joe Storner (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) saved 12 shots on the 25 shots he faced on the day. 

The Yellow Jackets return action on Saturday, May 1 as they travel to Marietta to take on Marietta College in the regular season OAC finale at 4:00 p.m. in Don Drumm Stadium.
