Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 10 Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team fell to No. 10 nationally-ranked Marietta College by a final score of 83-71 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

Junior All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led BW (5-3, 1-2 OAC) with 23 points and four assists while sophomore All-OAC guard Drew Wennes (Huron) added 15 points. 

Marietta (5-2, 2-0 OAC) was led by senior guard Lukas Isaly with 19 points, In addition, senior forward Mason Lydic and junior forward Sahmi Willoughby both contributed 15 points.

The first ten minutes of the match featured back-and-forth action as both teams battled for the lead. The Yellow Jackets began to pull forward when junior guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) made two three-point jump shots in two minutes. Mazzeo contributed another three points to the board, pushing BW forward by 11 points. Marietta worked hard to catch up, but BW kept just out of reach. The half ended with another three-point jump shot from Snyder and a layup from Marietta. The score was 30-37 going into halftime.

Both teams came out hot with three-point jump shots from both sides. The Pioneers then went on an 11-point scoring streak to take the lead from the Yellow Jackets. The lead alternated between the teams for most of the half.  With six minutes left to play, Marietta scored nine unanswered points until Wennes responded with a three-point jump shot. The Yellow Jackets fought to catch up as the Pioneers held the lead, but Marietta ultimately took the victory by a final score of 83-71.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Sunday, December 19 when they travel to Miami Gardens, Florida to participate in the Cruzin Classic at St. Thomas University. They will face off against the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at the Fernandez Family Center at 2:00 p.m.
