Four Yellow Jackets Lead BW to Victory Against Otterbein

BEREA, OHIO – Four Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball players scored in double figures as it defeated Otterbein University, 90-67, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jacket win was its fifth straight versus the Cardinals.

With its win, BW (7-5, 3-2 OAC), senior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name), scored a game-high 26 points and moved into 23rd place all-time on the Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,119 points.  In addition to Krakowiak for BW, junior forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Technical) recorded his first career double-double as he scored a career-best 19 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds.  Senior All-OAC power forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) recorded his third straight double-double as he scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) added 16 points and dished out a game-high nine assists.

With his 17 points, Payne now has 1,345 career points to stand in 15th place all-time and is 16 points shy of Ron Myers (1977-80) in 14th place with 1,361 points.  Today, Krakowiak surpassed Joe Mackey (1,095), Jon Carroll (1,098), Wilbur Wilson (1,108), Jerry Suess (1,111) and Dick Scott (1,116) and now needs 16 points to tie Keith Aufmuth (2002-06) in 22nd place with 1,135 points
Otterbein (2-10, 1-4) had four players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Jake Bischoff with 14 points.  Senior forward Jon Juergens contributed 13, freshman point guard Jake Phillips tallied 12 and freshman forward Grant Fenner contributed 10.
In the first half, BW jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on buckets by Crowe, Dennis and Krakowiak with 17:47 remaining.   The Cardinals responded with a 4-0 run and tied the game at 6-6 on a layup by junior guard Andy Yazrombeck at the 17:04 mark.  
The game would be tied on three more occasions with the last coming at 12-12 before the Yellow Jackets would respond with a 8-0 run to take a 20-12 advantage on a jumper by Krakowiak with 10:27 remaining.   Otterbein quickly responded with another 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 20-18 on a jumper by junior forward Marshall Crum at 9:03.
BW would outscore the Cardinals 24-7 over the remainder of the half and lead 44-25 at the intermission.
Otterbein opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 44-31 on a jumper by Juergens with 18:09 left to play.  The Jackets responded with a 6-0 to push the lead to 50-31 on a layup by Dennis at 16:14.
BW would push the lead to as many as 23 points on two occasions in the second half  with the last coming at 90-67 on the first career basket by sophomore forward Ryan Walsh (Easton, Pa./Easton Area). The Cardinals would come no closer than 13 points on two occasions with the last coming at 65-52 on a trey from freshman guard Matt Rhodes at 7:48.
