No. 4 Baseball Closes Conference Play in Doubleheader Split with John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team concluded Ohio Athletic Conference play in a doubleheader split against cross-town rival John Carroll University winning the first game by a score of 11-4 and dropping the second by a score of 10-2 at Schweickert Field.

After falling to their cross-town rival in last year's OAC tournament, BW (32-7, 15-3 OAC) got revenge by scoring seven straight in the first four innings of Game 1 and never looked back. The Brown and Gold jumped out to another early lead in the finale but the John Carroll (15-23, 7-11 OAC) put up two four-run innings to even the season series.

Game 1

Scoring Plays

  • Top 1st - Senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) had the bases loaded and cleared them all with a three-run triple
  • Top 1st - Sophomore left fielder Trent Bucy (Eastlake/Eastlake North) grounded out to drive in Anastasio
  • Top 2nd - Junior designated hitter Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) hit a double to left-center
  • Top 3rd - Bucy singled down the left field line for his second RBI of the day
  • Top 4th - Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) hit a solo shot to right
  • Top 6th - Kilbane added another double for his 21st extra base hit on the year
  • Top 6th - Anastasio added to his big day at the plate with his second triple and fourth RBI
  • Top 7th - Junior right fielder Joey Marousek (North Royalton) drove in BW's tenth run with a fielder's choice
  • Top 9th - Sophomore center fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) collected his first RBI of the day with a single up the middle

At the Plate

  • Ritlinger-Nirider was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four singles and a double
  • Anastasio was a homer short of the cycle as he finished with four hits, four RBI and two runs scored
  • Kilbane went 3-for-5 and added two RBI
  • Bucy was the last Yellow Jacket with a multi-hit game as he tallied two hits and two RBI

One the Mound

  • Junior right-hander Vince Dolcemaschio (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) threw eight innings, holding the Blue Streaks scoreless through four, and punched out 10 batters: the most for any Yellow Jacket arm this season
  • Freshman right-hander Matt Moscarino (Strongsville/Padua Franciscan) pitched the ninth where he allowed only one hit and added a strikeout

Game 2

Scoring Plays

  • Top 1st - Sophomore left fielder Nolan Kellicker (Dover) gave the Brown and Gold an early lead with a single to center
  • Top 7th - Marousek hit a sacrifice groundout to try to get things going for the Yellow Jackets

At the Plate

  • Kellicker led the way with two hits and an RBI
  • Junior first baseman Nathan Zinn (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and freshman third baseman Ryan Gordon (Strongsville) each recorded a pinch-hit single
  • Sophomore shortstop Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) colllected his first hit of the day with a bunt single
  • Anastasio added another hit for his fifth of the day

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) got the start and went two innings where he allowed five earned runs
  • Sophomore left-hander Carson Collins (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph's) threw three innings in relief as he tied a career-high three strikeouts and allowed only two hits
  • Senior All-OAC right-hander Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) surrendered four runs on five hits in two innings of relief and struck out three
  • Senior All-OAC right-hander Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) struck out one of his four batters and allowed one hit in his inning pitched

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Sunday, May 5 when they host Senior's Day and the regular season finale in a non-conference game against Allegheny (Pa.) College at 1 p.m. at Fisher Field.
