Baseball Selected to 2023 NCAA Tournament

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team has been selected to the 2023 NCAA Division III National Tournament. 

Announced via the NCAA selection show on May 15th, BW (31-10) receives one of 17 at-large bids to this year's tournament. The Yellow Jackets will take on St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions Spalding (Ky.) University on Friday, May 19th. Spalding enters the regional with a 34-10 overall record.           

Denison University hosts the four-team regional, which also includes Beloit (Wis.) College. The four teams will compete in a double elimination style tournament (May 19-21). The winner of each regional will advance to the best-of-three format super-regional on May 26-27.  The eight super regional winners advance to the Division III World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Two other Ohio Athletic Conference schools will be competing in the national tournament. OAC Tournament Champion John Carroll University will take on Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament champion Aurora (Ill.) University in a best of five series. Marietta College earned an at-large bid and will host a four-team regional consisting of Mary Washington (Va.) University, Case Western Reserve University and Adrian (Mich.) College. 

BW is led by senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) led the team in batting average and home runs. He is also tied for the team led with 42 RBIs. Sophomore All-OAC infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) leads the squad with 72 hits and has scored 42 runs with 37 RBIs. Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) leads the team with 43 runs and 13 stolen bases.

Senior All-OAC right-handed Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) led the team with an 8.0 record and a 3.57 earned run average (ERA). In 70.2 innings pitched he has tallied 73 strikeouts and held hitters to a .229 batting average. Senior All-OAC left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) posted a 6-4 record with a 3.66 ERA and two complete games and a shutout. In 59 innings, he 47 strikeouts and .247 batting average.

BW is making their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth under head coach Brian Harrison, who is the 2023 and 2018 OAC Coach of the Year.
