Baseball Selected to 2022 NCAA Tournament

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team has been selected to the 2022 NCAA Division III National Tournament. 

Announced via the NCAA selection show Monday afternoon, BW (32-11) receives one of 18 at-large bids to this year's tournament. The Yellow Jackets will take on the host-school Brockport (N.Y.) University on Friday, May 20. Brockport enters the tournament with a 33-9 overall record after capturing an at-large bid. 

Brockport hosts the four-team regional, which also includes Wheaton (Mass.) University and Johnson & Wales (R. I.) University-Providence. The four teams will play double elimination style. The super-regional will be a best-of-three format (May 27-28) with the eight winners advancing to the Division III World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

One other OAC school will also be competing in the national tournament. OAC Regular Season and Tournament Champion Marietta College will host and take on Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champion Kalamazoo (Mich.) College. 

Offensively, BW is led by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) and senior Midest Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan). Vonderhaar, who is batting .355 with a slugging average of .716, leads the team in homeruns (15), is the BW Single Season Record holder in RBIs (62). He also leads the OAC in both categories. Ludwick has batted .364 this season and has garnered a number of career records including: most games played/started, at-bats, hits, runs, RBIs, singles, doubles, and triples.

Junior Academic All-OAC centerfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) leads BW in batting average, hitting .389 and is tied for most hits (68). Junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) is second on the team in batting average, hitting .370 and leads the team in doubles with 17.

On the mound, the Yellow Jackets are led by junior right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.), who leads the team in innings pitched (60.2). Gabe had an eight-inning performance in the opening game of the 2022 Ohio Athletic Conference, earning the win and totaling 11 strikeouts. Gabe has a 4-3 record on the year, is third in the OAC in strikeouts with 77. Vonderhaar, Capolupo, Guggenheim, and Gabe all earned a spot on the OAC All-Tournament Team.

This will be BW's ninth overall NCAA Tournament appearance and the fifth under head coach Brian Harrison, who was the 2018 OAC Coach of the Year.
