No. 15 Baseball Beats Crosstown Rival John Carroll in Rain Filled Game

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 15 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team hosted John Carroll University for Seniors' Day and the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season finale on Fisher Field. The teams were scheduled for a doubleheader, but a rain delay forced game two to be cancelled. The Yellow Jackets (29-9, 12-5 OAC) defeated the Blue Streaks (18-20, 9-8 OAC) in game one by a final score of 6-2.

BW was led by senior outfielder Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School) as he batted in two runs. Senior All-OAC utility player Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) pitched five scoreless innings for BW, allowing just three hits, and striking out seven batters. Junior utility player Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) went 2-3 with a run and an RBI.

Scoring Plays

  • BW earned the 2-0 jump in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by senior All-Mideast Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) and a sacrifice fly by junior All-OAC first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen)
  • JCU tied the game in the top of the second at 2-2
  • The Yellow Jackets earned the 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) and a two-run single up the middle by Kamalipour
  • After a long rain delay, BW scored one in the first inning back to play, in the fifth, on an RBI single by Guggenheim (6-2)
  • Each team was scoreless in the remaining frames as BW went on to claim the 6-2 crosstown rivalry win over the Blue Streaks

On the Mound

  • Junior right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) started for BW, pitching the four innings before the delay, allowing two runs on four hits, and totaled six strikeouts
  • Right hander Wilson threw the remaining five innings, allowing no runs on three hits, and tallied seven strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets return to play Sunday, May 8 as the team travels to Erie, Pennsylvania as they face Penn State University Behrend in a non-conference single game. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. on Penn State Behrend Baseball Field.
