WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Five Baldwin Wallace University baseball players have been named to the 2022 All-Ohio Athletic Conference baseball team. These players have helped the Yellow Jackets to advance to the NCAA Baseball Championship and to an overall record of 32-11.
Senior All-Mideast Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan), senior All-OAC utility player Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), junior Academic All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate, and junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) were selected to the first-team. Junior right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) earned second-team honors.
Ludwick, who receives his third First-Team All-OAC honor, is a leader offensively on this team, batting .364 on the year. Ludwick has a slugging average of .610 with 27 extra base hits. He has totaled 68 hits, 56 runs, 40 RBIs, 16 doubles, three triples, eight homeruns, and 14 stolen bases. In the 23-3 win over Sewanee: The University of the South (Tenn.), Ludwick hit 3-for-5 with six RBIs, three runs, a double, a homerun, and a stolen base.
In his illustrious career at BW, Ludwick has garnered a number of career records including most games played/started, at-bats, hits, runs, RBIs, singles, doubles, and triples. He is also tied for the Single Season Triples Record at six, which he set in 2019. In his career, Ludwick has tallied 280 hits, 200 runs, 165 RBIs, 182 singles, 59 doubles, 19 triples, 20 homeruns, and 50 stolen bases. Off the field, he is a Dean's List student.
Wilson, who receives his second All-OAC honor, has a batting average of .322 and an earned run average (ERA) of 3.47. He has tallied 57 hits, 52 runs, 42 RBIs, 13 doubles, and five homeruns. On the mound, Wilson has pitched 36.1 innings (second on the team) and leads the team in wins with six, which is also good for third in the OAC. He also leads the team in saves with three. Wilson has earned eight shutouts during his time on the mound this year, totaling 42 strikeouts and has only walked five batters.
In his career, Wilson has notched 120 hits, 88 runs, 85 RBIs, 35 doubles, two triples, and eight homeruns. From the mound, he has pitched 99.2 innings and earned 121 strikeouts.
Capolupo earns his first All-OAC accolade by leading the team in batting average (.389). Capolupo has hit 22 extra base hits to earn a slugging average of .594. He is tied for first on the team in runs (56) and hits (68). Capolupo has so far posted 14 doubles, two triples, and six homeruns this season. He also leads the team in stolen bases.
In Capolupo's career, he has totaled 75 hits, 65 runs, 34 RBIs, 75 hits, 15 doubles, and 18 stolen bases. Off the field, he is an Academic All-OAC recipient, a Dean's list student, and a Jacket Scholar.
Vonderhaar, who receives his second first-team All-OAC honor, bats .355 this year with a .716 slugging average. He has smoked the ball all season, totaled 30 extra base hits. He leads the team and the OAC in RBIs (62) and homeruns (15). In the OAC Tournament Championship game, Vonderhaar tallied two RBIs to make him the BW Single Season Record holder with 62. He has tallied 60 hits, 47 runs, 14 doubles, one triple, and 15 homeruns. Vonderhaar has had three two-homerun games this year and earned a career-high six RBIs against Heidelberg University.
In his career, Vonderhaar has posted 109 hits 96 RBIs, 83 runs, 23 doubles, two triples, and 20 homeruns. Recently, he was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 team for the first time in his career. Off the field, Vonderhaar is an Academic All-OAC honoree, a Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar, and a member of the Dayton C. Miller honorary.
Gabe, who received All-OAC honors for the first time in his career, has pitched 60.2 innings and totaled 77 strikeouts. Gabe has had 13 appearances and hold his opponents to a .270 batting average. He is third in the OAC in total strikeouts, second in strikeouts per nine innings (11.42), and third in overall ERA (3.41). Gabe had a standout performance in the OAC Tournament opening win over Otterbein University, pitching eight innings, allowing just two runs on six hits, and striking out 11 batters. In his career, Gabe has pitched 111.1 innings, faced 506 batters, and totaled 150 strikeouts.
With the help of these five athletes, the 2022 Yellow Jackets have become the Team Single Season Record holder in runs (437), RBIs (405), doubles (117), and homeruns (63). BW is also making its way to its ninth program NCAA Tournament appearance, and fifth under head coach Brian Harrison.
The Yellow Jackets will compete in NCAA Regionals starting Friday, May 20 as they travel to Brockport, N.Y. BW will first face The College at Brockport, State University of New York at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Clark V. Whited Complex to begin a four-team, double elimination bracket.
