Gibbs Named OAC Coach of Year, Seven Wrestlers Selected to All-OAC Team

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio --  Baldwin Wallace University Head Wrestling Head Coach Jamie Gibbs has been named the Ohio Athletic Coach of the Year and seven wrestlers have been selected to the All-OAC team.  

The 2021 All-OAC team, which is voted on by the coaches, features the top-27 wrestlers in the conference without a first or second team designation.

Gibbs, who just completed his 10th season, earns his fifth Coach of the Year Award in the last six season after leading No. 6-nationally ranked BW to an undefeated overall and conference record of 6-0.   His previous honors came in four consecutive seasons from 2015-19.  During his tenure, Gibbs has mentored 43 All-OAC selections, 37 Academic All-OAC performers, 34 National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar performers, 15 All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans. 

Landing on the All-OAC team were seniors Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic), Kevin Kelly (North Olmsted) and Tanner McHugh (New Ringgold, Pa./Tamaqua) and sophomores Doug Byrne (Wickliffe), Drew Levis (Elyria), Luke Salmon (Sandusky/Perkins) and Jack Stanley (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights).

Bleich, who earns his fourth honor, was a perfect 6-0 in 2021 with 15 takedowns, four escapes and two major decisions.  For his career, he is a two-time NCAA Division III National Championships qualifier and a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-American.  Bleich ranks ninth on the all-time wins list with 105 victories and a 105-20 record. Off the mat, he is a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American team selection, two-time Academic All-OAC performer, a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, Dean's List student, a Jacket scholar and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Kelly, who garners his first honor, finished his senior campaign undefeated with a record of 7-0 with He recorded five takedowns, two pins, one major decision and one technical fall. For his career, Kelly posted a record of 33-21 with 38 takedowns, nine major decisions, five pins and four technical falls. 

McHugh, who earns his second accolade, was 2-0 in 2021 with 15 takedowns, one pin and one technical fall.  For his career, he ranks tied for 38th on the all-time wins list with 65 victories and a record of 65-32.  Off the mat, McHugh is a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American team selection, two-time All-Academic All-OAC  performer, Dean's list student, Jacket Scholar and member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Byrne, who garners his first honor, picked the OAC Award for most pins in the least amount of time with four in 13:21. He finished his second season undefeated with a record of 6-0 and with five takedowns and four pins.  Last year, Byrne was a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-American, NCAA Division III National qualifier and All-Central Region performer. In his two seasons, Byrne has a record of 31-9 with 48 takedowns, 44 escapes, 16 pins, three major decisions and one technical falls.  Off the mat, he is a NWCA Scholar All-American Team selection.

Levis, who earns his first accolade, finished the 2021 season with a record of 4-1.  He recorded three escapes, two takedowns and one pin.  For his career, Levis has a record of 12-4 with 13 escapes, eight takedowns and two pins.

Salmon, who garners his second honor, posted a record of 5-1 with six takedowns, five escapes, three pins and one technical fall.   For his career, Salmon has tallied a record of 29-11 with 44 escapes, 36 takedowns, seven pins, five major decisions and four technical falls. Off the mat, he is a NWCA Scholar All-American Team selection.

Stanley, who earns his second accolade, was undefeated in 2021 with a record of 4-0.   He recorded two takedowns, one pin and one escape.  Last year, Stanley was a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-American, NCAA Division III National qualifier, All-Central Region performer and was the BW Rookie of the Year Award recipient.  In two seasons, he has a record of 32-11 with 62 takedowns, 45 escapes, eight pins, five major decisions and one technical fall.

BW finished the abbreviated 2021 season with an undefeated record of 6-0 and a perfect mark of 6-0 in the OAC.   The Yellow Jackets captured their fifth OAC title in the last six seasons.   BW finished the season ranked sixth in NCAA Division III.
