No.14 Wrestlers Sweep Mount St. Joseph in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – Tthe No.14-ranked (National Wrestling Coaches Association Brute/ adidas Division III national poll) Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team swept Mount St. Joseph University in a non-conference dual match, 54-0, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. It was the first of two days of competition for BW.

The Yellow Jackets (3-2) swept all ten matches and were led by freshman 133-pounder Markus Cruz (Lorain/ Clearview), sophomore 197-pounder Andrew Shackelford (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) and freshman 285-pounder Nick Nader (Gahanna/ Lincoln) who all won by pin.  Cruz pinned Charlie Heyob at 2:41, Shackelford pinned Gabe Stiver at 3:34 and Chris Risch fell to Nader at 4:36.

In addition, junior Division III All-American 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/ Coventry) won by technical fall against Donald Herrington, 18-2.  Gunter is ranked third in Division III and improved his career mark to 68-7 overall. Sophomore 141-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) defeated Luis Godines in a major decision, 16-4.  Junior 184-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) defeated Tyler Ray by decision, 10-4.

Closing out the sweep of MSJ and winning by forfeit were junior 149-pounder Joey Schmidt (Hinckley/Brunswick), freshman 157-pounder Grant Rathburn (New Albany/Bishop Hartley), sophomore 165-pounder Graham Montague (Independence) and junior 174-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood).

BW is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 15 when it travels to Angola, Indiana to compete at the annual Trine University Tournament in Hershey Hall at 10 a.m.
