23rd-Ranked BW Wrestlers Finish 4-0 at Mariner Duals

KINS POINT, N.Y. – The 23rd-ranked (December 9 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll) Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished with a perfect 4-0 record and defeated three other ranked opponents at the Mariner Duals hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

The Yellow Jackets, now 10-4 overall in dual matches, defeated No.15 Roger Williams (R.I.) University, 24-15, No.18 Johnson & Wales (R.I.) University, 24-18, No.24 Hunter (N.Y.) College, 34-7 and host USMMA, 26-9.
 
Leading the way was freshman 133-pounder Markus Cruz (Lorain/ Clearview), sophomore 157-pounder Kenny Faulkner (Beliot/ West Branch) and junior No.9-ranked 174-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) each had a 4-0 record and junior 184-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) was 3-0. Cruz is now12-5 this season, Faulkner is 9-6, Chase is 17-3 and LeBrun is 15-5 overall.

In addition, junior No.4-ranked 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) and sophomore 141-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron/ CVCA) each had 3-1 marks. Junior No.3-ranked 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/ Coventry), who was battling a cold/ illness, was 1-0. His backup, freshman Chris Doyle (Uniontown/ Green) was 2-1. Shapiro is 14-1 this season, Decatur is 13-4, Gunter is 12-1 and Doyle is 10-6.

The BW wrestlers are now idle until January 10, 2015 when they will compete at the Spartan Mat Duals at Manchester (Ind.) University. The next home match is on Tuesday, Jan. 20 when BW hosts Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
