No. 16 BW Grapplers Take Second at Brockport (N.Y.) Invitational

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The 16th nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team had 19 top-five finishers, including five individual champions as the Yellow Jackets were the runner-ups at the Brockport Invitational hosted by Brockport University in the Special Events Recreation Center.

Brockport won its own invitational with 146 points.   BW was the runner-up with 142 points, Norwich (Vt.) University was third with 62.5, University of Buffalo (N.Y.) was fourth with 57.5, Johns Hopkins (Md.) University was fifth with 50 and Niagara County Community College (N.Y.) was sixth with 21.  

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore 141-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), sophomore 157-pounder Kenny Faulkner (Beloit/West Branch), junior All-Ohio Athletic conference 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood), junior 174-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa/Cathedral Prep), freshman 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) as each were individual champions.  

Decatur had a first-round bye then posted victories against Pete Ottaviano of Brockport with an 11-6 decision, a 6-3 decision against fellow BW teammate Zach Taylor (Brunswick) and won the title with a 5-3 decision against Sean O`Hagan of Brockport. 
Faulkner had a first-round bye then defeated Yellow Jacket teammate sophomore Seamus Bermingham (Orchard Park, N.Y.) by a 7-1 decision, posted a 6-0 decision against James Devine of Brockport and won the title against BW teammate sophomore Graham Montague(Independence) by a 3-2 decision.

Shapiro had a first round bye then defeated Michael Falcon of Brockport by a 6-3 decision and won the title with a technical fall of 16-1 against Ryan Therrein of Buffalo.  

Chase, who is ranked 10th-nationally, had a first round bye then defeated Shane Curry of Niagara County Community College with a 4-0 decision, posted a major decision victory by a score of 10-2 against Cody Gladstone of Norwich and won the title with a 9-2 decision against Tyler Lusht of Brockport,.

Maclellan had a first round bye then had to face two fellow Yellow Jackets as he defeated sophomore Tyler Keating (Fairview Park/Fairview) with a technical fall of 15-0 and won the title against sophomore Andrew Shackelford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) by a 2-1 decision.

Finishing as runner-ups were Montague and Shackelford.  The pair posted records of 2-1 and 1-1 record, respectively.
Placing in third place were freshman 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Uniontown / Green), Taylor, junior 149-pounder Joe Schmidt(Hinckley / Brunswick), Bermingham, junior 184-pounder Ben Lebrun (Strongsville), Keating and 285-pounder Joe Belford(Berea/St. Edward). DoyleTaylor, BerminghamLebrunKeating and Belford all went 3-1 on the day while Schmidt was 2-1.

Finishing in fourth place were freshman 157-pounder Grant Rathburn (New Albany / Columbus Bishop Hartley), freshman 165-pounder Kaegan Pearsall (Moretown, Vt. /Harwood Union) and freshman 184-pounder Gabe Mahaney (North Canton/Green).  Rathburn was 3-2 and Mahaney went of 2-2, including a loss to Lebrun in the third place match.  Pearsall was 0-2 with two byes.

Rounding out the top-five finishers were freshman 133-pounder Markus Cruz (Lorain/Clearview) and freshman 285-pounder Andrew Sierawski (Delaware/Hayes).  Cruz had a record of 1-2 and Sierawski was 2-1.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, January 20 when they host an OAC dual match against cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
