BW Wrestlers Finish 1-1 at Thiel (Pa.) Mel Berry Duals

GREENVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA – The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team had a 1-1 record, today at the annual Mel Berry Duals in Beeghley Gymnasium at Thiel (Pa.) College.

With its 1-1 mark at Thiel, BW is 4-3 overall in dual matches and next competes on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University in the Performance Court of the Muskingum Recreation Center in New Concord, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets competed in two dual matches and defeated to Mercyhurst (Pa.) University Northeast, 40-9, and lost to host Thiel, 24-18. Individually, freshman 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/ Coventry), who is ranked eighth in the latest NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association), highlighted the day by winning his 21st and 22nd consecutive matches to improve to 24-1 overall. In his first match against Mercyhurst he won with a major decision over Aaron Smith, 18-6.

In addition to Gunter, freshman 149-pounder Joey Schmidt (Hinckley / Brunswick), David Shapiro (Beachwood), 197-pounder Wes King (Columbus / Dublin Scioto)  each had a 2-0 mark today.

Against Mercyhurst Northeast, BW was led by pins from Schmidt in 36 seconds, 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) in 4:44 and Shapiro  in 5:38. In addition, freshman 174-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) won by decision 3-0  and 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/ Lakewood St. Edward) won by decision 6-0 and freshman 184-pounder Brian Fox (Dublin / Scioto ) and King each won by forfeit.

Against Thiel, the Jackets were led by Gunter, who pinned Nick Hart in 29 seconds, Schmidt, who pinned Shawn King in 1:09, Shapiro, won by decision 7-6 over Jordan Powell, and King, won by decision 8-2 over Jake Trillow.

Following its trip to Muskingum, the Yellow Jackets return home to host the 27th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.
