Wrestlers Finish Second at 25th Annual John Summa Tournament

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished second of six teams  today (Saturday, February 5, 2011) at the 25th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.  Waynesburg University of Pennsylvania captured the team title with 125 total points and Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge) and Tristan Stoll (Milan/Edison) of Baldwin Wallace were named as 2011 Summa Tournament Co-Most Valuable Wrestlers.

The Yellow Jackets had 118.5 total points and were led by 174-pounder Scavuzzo and 197-pounderStoll. Each won his respective weight class with perfect 3-0 records. Placing second included junior 125-pounder Jeremy Dombrady (Copley), freshman 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/ Worthington Kilbourne), senior 165-pounder Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/ Pymatuning Valley) and sophomore 184-pounderJoe Georgian (Eastlake/ Villa Angela-St. Joseph). Placing third was 141-pounder Grant Steward (Columbus/  Worthington Kilbourne). Finishing fourth was 285-pounder Ryan Tudor (Pataskala/  Watkins Memorial) and in fifth place was 285-pounder Ryan Jones (Uniontown/ Lake).

Dombrady  placed second and compiled a 2-1 mark to improve his overall record to 19-13.  He pinned his first opponent in 33 seconds to advance to the semi-finals where he won by a decision of 6-4. Dombardy then lost in the finals to number-one seeded Alex Crown of Waynesburg by a decision of 9-3.

Taylor placed second with a 3-1 slate and improved his overall record to 16-9.  He started by winning by a pin in a time of 2:28. In his second match he won by a score of 12-4 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, he beat teammate Grant Steward in overtime decision by a final score of 5-3. Taylor then got pinned in the finals.

Payne placed fourth with a 3-2 mark and moves his overall record to 11-6.  He pinned his first opponent in 52 seconds to advance into the next round where he lost by a decision of 9-3. Payne went on to win his next two matches as he pinned his opponent in 29 seconds to earn The Fastest Pin Award. He then won his next match by a technical fall of 16-1 in 2:15 and then won by a major decision of 13-3 to advance to the third place match where he lost by a decision of 5-4.

Leonhard finished second with a 2-1 mark and now has an overall record of 22-9.  In his first match, he won by a forfeit to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Leonhard won by a decision of 8-2 to advance to the championship match. In the championship match, he lost by decision of 7-5.

Scavuzzo captured the 174-pound championship by going 3-0 and improving his overall record to 29-2. He started out with a major decision by the score of 17-4 to advance to the semi-finals. Scavuzzo then won in the semifinals by a major decision of 12-1. In the finals, Scavuzzo captured the crown by a medical forfeit. 

Steward finished third with a record of 3-1 and now has an overall record of 17-16. In his first match, he won by a major decision by the score of 11-1. In the semi finals, he lost to teammate Andrew Taylor in an overtime decision by a score of 5-3. He then won his next two matches, including a 4-1 win in the third place match.

Georgian finished in second with a record of 2-1 and improves his overall record to 14-7. He won his first match by decision of 12-3. In the semifinals, he won by decision of 5-2. In the finals, Georgian lost by decision of 4-2.

Stoll captured the 197-pound championship by going 3-0, all by pins, and improved his season mark to 21-4. In his first match, Stoll won by pin in 3:36.  That victory advanced Stoll to the semifinals where he won by a pin in 2:43. In the championship, Stoll pinned his opponent in 1:15. 

Jones began with a win by forfeit. He then went on to pin his next opponent in 4:18 to advance him to the semifinals. Jones then went on to lose his next matches which placed him in the fifth place match where he won by a medical forfeit.   

The Yellow Jacket grapplers are in action this Tuesday, February 8 when they host the first of three home matches next week vs. Heidelberg University at 7:30 p.m.
