Baldwin Wallace Wrestlers to be Improved Again in 2010-11

Baldwin Wallace Wrestlers to be Improved Again in 2010-11
BEREA, OHIO -- Veteran Baldwin Wallace University Head Wrestling Coach Rich Fleming has been around long enough to know that you can't change the world or even a wrestling team overnight.  So, this season, the venerable Yellow Jacket mentor has some modest goals for his team that began with its first practice and will end with its last competition.

"My goal is to improve every day," said Fleming, who begins his 23rd season at BW this fall and his 44th overall as a head coach.  "Our goal is to improve one percent at every practice and competition from the start of the season until the end.  As always, we hope to peak for the national duals, the annual John Summa Tournament, at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament and at the NCAA Division III National Tournament."

This season, Fleming, welcomes back 12 lettermen and seven starters from his team of a year ago. Although the Yellow Jackets finished season with a 5-13 overall dual match record and sixth at the OAC Tournament,Fleming saw plenty of improvement from his 2010-11 returnees.

"We have a solid nucleus of veterans returning, including Scavuzzo [174-pounder Andrew], Stoll [197-pounder Tristan] and Jones [285-pounder Ryan] as the main leaders,"said Fleming, who is the second winningest wrestling coach in school history and trails just the legendary John Summa. "Combine the returning veterans with a strong group of newcomers as well as some consistent improvement, and we'll have a good season."

In addition to Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge)Tristan Stoll (Milan/ Edison) and Ryan Jones (Uniontown/ Lake), the other returning starters are senior 125-pounder Tyler Erwin (Westerville/ Watkins Memorial) and junior 125-pounder Jeremy Dombrady (Copley), senior 133-pounder Phil Payne (Woodmere/ Orange), junior 141-pounder Grant Steward (Columbus /Worthington Kilbourne), sophomoreDanny Huffman (Maple Heights) at either 141 or 149 pounds, senior Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/ Pymatuning Valley) at either 157 or 165 pounds, junior Mike Hosta (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) at 165 or 174 pounds, sophomore Joe Georgian (Eastlake/ Villa Angela-St. Joseph) at 184 pounds and junior Ryan Tudor (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) at 197 pounds.

"We have 12 returning veterans who all essentially started at one time or another and all have the necessary experience to be successful and help the program this season," said Fleming. "The most impressive part of it is that each young man has the talent, ability and leadership necessary to help us."

Scavuzzo returns after compiling a 52-31 mark his first three seasons, including both an OAC title and an NCAA Division III Tournament berth as a sophomore. Stoll competed for the first time last winter and compiled a 20-4 record with a team-leading 13 pins and earned All-OAC honors by placing third at 197 pounds.  Jonesalso competed for the first time last winter and had a solid, 18-11 mark.  Look for the trio to be the leaders again in 2010-11, but they aren't the only ones.

At 125 pounds, Erwin and Dombrady will be challenged for mat time this winter by freshmen Andrew Taylor (Columbus/ Worthington Kilbourne) and Tyreese Brown (Cleveland/ Glenville)Erwin posted a 6-10 record last season and had a career-high four falls. He has 18 career wins and seven falls. Dombrady transferred to BW in the winter of 2009 and has competed for two seasons. He was 3-9 a year ago while battling injuries and has eight career victories and two falls.  Both expect to be significantly better this winter and should be pushed to new heights by the newcomers.

At 133 pounds, Payne probably made as much improvement as any grappler on the squad and had a 15-10 record with 35 takedowns. He enters his final campaign with 22 career wins and has five falls. Taylor and fellow freshman Tim Hamm (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) will challenge him for mat time.

At 141 pounds, Steward looks to improve on a six-win season in 2009-10 which doubled his total as a freshman. This season, he hopes to again double his pleasure. Hamm will also compete for mat time at 141.

At 149 pounds, Huffman, who wrestled at 133, 141 or 149 pounds last season, looks to earn the starting spot. He had a 6-7 record with five pins.

At 157 and 165 pounds, Leonhard will have to decide which weight class that he wants to compete at. Last season, he posted an overall record of 14-10 with 25 takedowns in the 157 pound weight class. He enters the season with 37 career wins and 78 career takedowns. Look for freshman Tyler Blaine (Powell/ Worthington Kilbourne) to push Leonard to 165 pounds and take over at 157. In addition, Hosta adds strength and depth at 165, 174 or 184. Each season he has improved.

Look for Scavuzzo to be a force at 174 pounds. Last season, Georgian compiled a 2-8 mark at 165 pounds, but will move up this season to either 174 or 184 pounds.

At 197 pounds in Stoll and at 285 pounds in JonesFleming has two solid mainstays. In addition, he also has two more solid grapplers for strength and depth in Tudor and freshman 285-pounder Ty Bromund (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark)Tudor won seven matches as a freshman in 2008-2009 but did not compete last winter. Look for that quartet to be a strength this winter.

The Yellow Jackets open the season on Saturday, November 6 when they travel to Grantham, Pennsylvania to compete at the Messiah College Tournament. BW's home opener is set for Tuesday, Nov. 30 versus NCAA Division II Tiffin University at 7:30 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 7:30 p.m. The 2011 OAC Championship Tournament is on February 25 at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.
