Waynesburg University Invitational Results
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished second of seven teams competing today (Saturday, January 15, 2011) at the annual Waynesburg University Invitational Tournament in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
The Yellow Jackets had 114 total points and had one individual champion, three second place finishers, one who placed third, one who placed fourth and three fifth place finishes.
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior senior 165-pounder Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/Pymatuning Valley)who was the only BW wrestler to place first. Placing second for the Yellow Jackets includes junior 125-pounderJeremy Dombrady (Copley), senior 133-pounder Phillip Payne (Woodmere/ Orange), and senior 174-pounder Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge). Senior 197-pounder Tristan Stoll (Milan/Edison)placed third, junior 141-pounder Grant Steward (Columbus/ Worthington Kilbourne) placed fourth, and the Yellow Jackets had three fifth place finishers including freshman 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne), sophomore 184-pounder Joe Georgian (Eastlake/Villa Angela-St. Joseph), and junior 285-pounder Ryan Jones (Uniontown/Lake).
Leonhard led the way by capturing the 165-pound championship after posting a 3-0 record while recording two major decisions along the way including a 13-4 victory in the finals. Leonhard advanced to the quarter-finals by winning by a major decison of 14-4. He then advanced into the finals because of a medical forfeit, and then proceded to win by another major decison, 13-4 to capture first place. Leonhard's 3-0 record improves his overall season record to 17-7.
Dombrady placed second in his weight class after going 2-1 on the day which moves his overall record to 14-11. He pinned his first opponent in a time of 4:23 to advance him into the semi-finals where he won by a decision of 7-6. Dombardy then lost in the finals to number one seeded Alex Crown of Waynesburg by a decision of 6-0.
Payne placed second in his weight class after going 2-1 on the day which moves his overall record to 5-4. He pinned his first opponent in a time of 4:18 to advance him into the semi-finals where he won by a decision of 4-2. Payne went on to lose in the finals to number one seeded Rico Borz of Waynesburg by a decision of 3-1.
Scavuzzo placed second giving him an 3-1 record for the day and improving his overall record to 22-2. He started out his day 3-0 decision to advance him into the quarter finals. Scavuzzo then quickly pinned his opponent in 2:15 advancing him to the semi-finals. Scavuzzo then advanced to the finals after defeating Jared Roberts of Waynesburg by a decision of 7-1. He was the upset in the finals by the number three seed Pat Stanley of Johns Hopkins, 8-5.
Stoll was 3-1 on the day and improved his season mark to 14-4. In his first match, Stoll won by pin in 3:21. That victory advanced Stoll to the semifinals where he lost to the eventual champ Reid Mosquera from Johns Hopkins by a decision of 12-5. Stoll then rebounded by pinning his next opponent in 2:50 to earn a spot in the third place match, where he pinned Jacob Linn of Waynesburg in 2:07.
Steward was 3-2 on the day and improved his season mark to 12-13. In his first match Steward was pinned in 1:40. He then rebound by winning his next three matches to earn a spot in the third place match. In the first of his three wins he pinned his opponent in 2:55, he then won by a major decision of 17-6. To cap of the three wins he defeated teammate Andrew Taylor by pinning him in 41 seconds. In the third place match he fell to Duncan Crystal from Johns Hopkins in a decision of 2-0.
Taylor placed fifth overall after going 2-2 on the day and improving his overall record to 15-10. He started out by pinning his first opponent in 1:08 to advance him to the semifinals where he lost to the eventual champ from Mercyhurst Northeast by a major decision 11-3. Taylor then lost to teammate Grant Steward getting pinned in 41 seconds to put him into the fifth place match. Taylor recovered with a victory, by defeating Gettysburg's Dan Traficanti, 8-5, to finsh fifth.
Georgian won his first match by pin in a time of 4:00 to move him into the semifinals where he lost his 9-5 to drop him into the consolation bracket. He then lost lost a very close match to D.J. Neri from Gettysburg, 3-2 to put him into the fifth place match. In that match he won by a medical forfeit. On the day, Georgian went 2-2 and improved his seasonal mark to 8-6.
Jones started out by pinning his first opponent in a time of 2:33. He then lost to Kevin Poplaski from Gettysburg, 12-1. He then won back-to-back matches winning the first by a score of 2-1 and second a count of 5-2. Jones then lost a close match to Gettsburg's Bobby Christopher, 9-8 to put him into the fifth place match where he won by a score of 3-2. Jones went 4-2 on the day and improved his overall record this year to 14-12.
The Yellow Jacket grapplers are in action again next Saturday, Jan. 22 when they travel to Greenville, Pennsylvania to compete at the Thiel College Quad with action beginning at 1:00 p.m. Then, following an Ohio Athletic Conference dual match at Wilmington College on Jan. 25, BW returns home to face OAC-rival Muskingum University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center on Tuesday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m. That match will be televised by regional cable network SportsTime Ohio.
