Wrestlers Compete on Day One of Lycoming (Pa.) Duals

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team competed this afternoon (Friday January 9, 2009) on day one of the Lycoming (Pa.) College Budd Whitehill Duals.   The Yellow Jackets finished 2-1.

In the first match, BW lost to 18th-ranked (National Wrestling Coaches Association) The College of New Jersey, 40-5, and then lost to King's (Pa.) College, 34-6, in round two. The Yellow Jackets then defeated Thiel (Pa.) College in the Challenge Bracket , 25-22.

Against TCNJ and King's in the Championship Bracket, senior 133-pounder Brian Bucher (Ottawa Hills/Avon Lake) recorded a 2-1 mark on the day. Bucher picked up a technical fall victory of 18-2 against Jaishon Scott for the lone Yellow Jacket win against TCNJ. He then earned an 8-6 win versus Anthony Dietrick of King's. Bucher's season record now stands at 18-4. Also against King's, senior 165-pounder Joe Incorvaia (Medina/Highland) won a 5-2 decision against Jerry Robbins.

In the victory versus Thiel (Pa.),the Yellow Jackets trailed 22-0 before winning the final five matches to claim the team win. Incorvaia picked up a major decision win over Devin Todd, 8-0, at 165 pounds to make the score 22-4. Then sophomore Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/Woodridge) won by major decision aganst Thiel's Sean Ferguson at 174 pounds to cut the lead to 22-8. Sophomore 184-pounder Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/ Pymatuning Valley) then won by technical fall against Thiel's Jeff Rockenstein, 20-5 (5:00) and BW trailed 22-13. The Jackets then picked up a pair of pins from freshman Ryan Tudor (Pataskala/ Watkins Memorial) and junior Cody Quick (Mt. Vernon) to claim the win. Tudor finished off Mike Nulph in 4:24 at 197 pounds and Quick did the same to Craig Smith in 4:35 at 285 pounds.

BW will be in action tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. for day two at Lycoming. 

The Jackets then host OAC-rival Heidelberg College on Tuesday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Berea. A film crew from ESPN will be on BW's campus from Jan. 11-15 to film junior heavyweight Terence Haynes (Brunswick Hills/Glenville) for a future episode of E60.
