BEREA, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season with a 13-8 victory against Ohio Wesleyan University in a non-conference match on Tressel Field in George Finnie Stadium.

In the two teams' first contest since 2014 and second overall, BW (1-0) improves to 1-1 in its all-time series against Ohio Wesleyan (0-1). The win also marks the second consecutive year that Yellow Jackets have opened their season with a victory.

Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attacker Brie Martineau (Strongsville) continued right where she left off in 2019, as she led the way for BW offensively, netting four goals and one assist. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC defender and reigning OAC Defender of the Year Hannah Stein (Medina/Highland) also joined in on the Yellow Jackets scoring contributions, garnering three goals and one assist in the victory.

Junior All-OAC goalkeeper Ashleigh Hildreth (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) earned her first victory of the 2020 season, stopping eight of the 16 shots she faced.

The Battling Bishops attack was spearheaded by freshman midfielder Evie Williams and freshman attacker Grace Egan, as both of them found the back of the net three times apiece, with Williams adding an assist as well.

There was no shortage of offense in the preliminary minutes of tonight's match. After winning the season's opening draw control, BW and senior midfielder Jordan Paugh (South Lyon, Mich.) stormed down the field to score the first goal of the game and the campaign, just 41 seconds into regulation. The first four minutes featured four goals from both squads in alternating fashion. The consistent back-and-forth exchange of goals continued until the 5:51 mark of the first half, as the score was all nodded up at 5-5. Martineau's goal at the aforementioned 5:51 mark, and her first of the season, spurred three straight goals for the Yellow Jackets to end the period.

BW's closing run of the first half spilled into the second, as the BW tacked on another two goals in the period's first five minutes, capped off by Stein's third goal of the night. With the Battling Bishops struggling to find offense, they turned to Egan who scored her third goal of the contest down a man, cutting the deficit to four with 18:47 remaining in the match. In response, Martineau took over the game offensively for the Yellow Jackets, scoring her final three goals on the night in a span of 9:54 to put the game out of reach for Ohio Wesleyan.

BW returns to action on Saturday, February 22 when it travels to Danville, Kentucky for a non-conference match against Centre (Ky.) College at 1:00 p.m. on South Campus Field.
