OBERLIN, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team fell in its non-conference game against nearby Oberlin College by a final score of 16-6 on Dick Bailey Field.
With the loss, BW (2-2) suffered its first road loss of the season. The Yellow Jackets also saw their all-time series record versus Oberlin (2-2) drop to 1-4.
The BW offense was led by junior midfielder Maddie Ray (Cuyahga Falls/Akron Reserve), who scored a team and season-high four goals on the afternoon, marking her fourth straight multi-goal game. Senior All-OAC attacker and Yellow Jackets leading scorer Brie Martineau (Strongsville) also chipped in with a goal and an assist in the defeat.
BW junior All-OAC goalkeeper Ashleigh Hildreth (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) saw her record drop to 2-2 on the season, making eight saves on 23 total shots faced. Freshman netminder Kyle Bliss (Fenton, Mich.) also made an appearance in between the pipes for the Yellow Jackets, allowing one goal on one shot in a career-high 7:19 of relief.
The first 10 minutes of the game featured a three-goal outburst for the Yeowomen. Facing a 3-0 deficit early on, BW finally got on the board at the 18:07 mark, when Ray potted her first of four goals in today's action to cut the deficit to two. After surrendering another Oberlin goal, Ray was able to find the back of the net once again. However, the Yeowomen persisted with the offensive pressure, notching their second three-goal swing of the half to increase their lead to 7-3 with 5:56 remaining before the break. Sophomore midfielder Sid Chamberlain (Wooster) provided some extra offensive support for the Yellow Jackets, capping off the first half's scoring with her second goal of the season.
The second half began much like the first, with Oberlin being responsible for all the offense up until the 17:02 mark. The Yeowomen used a 5-0 run during that span to take a commanding 12-3 lead. It was a long road to neutralizing the score for BW, but the Yellow Jackets were able to get consecutive scores for the first time in the game, thanks to goals from Martineau and Ray. Despite narrowing the gap to a seven-goal margin, Oberlin put the game away for good, embarking on another sizeable run of four goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Yellow Jackets' Ray netted her fourth and final goal of the game at the 3:06 mark of the frame, the lone bright spot in the closing minutes for BW, as the clock wound down and Oberlin secured the victory.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, February 7 when they kick off their slate of spring break non-conference games against Randolph-Macon (Va.) College on Day Field at 6:00 p.m.
