Miller’s Career Night Not Enough as BW Women’s Lacrosse Drops First OAC Game

BEREA, Ohio – Freshman defender/midfielder Kayla Miller (Hudson) scored a career-high three goals and tallied an assist for a career-best four points but it was not enough as the Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-8 Ohio Athletic Conference game to OAC defending champion University of Mount Union on Tressel Field inside The George Finnie Stadium.

In addition to Miller for BW (4-4, 1-1 OAC) junior attack Emma Harding (Akron/Revere) had two goals while senior attack Victoria Budzyn (East Amherst, N.Y.), sophomore All-OAC midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) and freshman attack Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) each added a goal.

Mount Union (11-0, 2-0 OAC) was led by junior attack Katherine Doraty with a game-high five goals while junior attack Susie Kraus tallied four goals. Sophomore attack/midfielder Emily Sendker contributed three goals.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets took an early 3-1 on two free position goals by Miller with the last coming at the 21:23 mark. The Purple Raiders responded with four goals to take 5-1 with the last coming by Kraus at 4:08. BW got the final score of the opening period when Wheeler found the back of the net of the cross from All-OAC midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) at the 2:40 mark. Mount Union led 5-4 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Purple Raiders extended their lead to 6-4 when Kraus netted the goal off the assist from Doraty at the 28:55 mark. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 6-5 when Miller scored her third goal of the game off the assist from Russell at 24:48.

Mount Union answered back with a 5-0 run to push the lead to 11-5 on a goal by Sendker of the assist from junior midfielder Taylor Pensyl at the 17:42 mark. BW cut the lead down to 11-6 on a goal by Harding off the cross from Miller at 17:16. After a Purple Raider goal, Harding scored her second straight goal to cut the lead down to 12-7 off the assist from Kocher at the 15:19 mark.

Mount Union responded with six goals to extend the lead to 18-7. The Yellow Jackets scored the final goal of the game when Russell found the back of the net off the assist from Kocher at 1:09.

In goal for BW, sophomore netminder Amanda Getto (Medina) faced 38 total shots, including 29 on goal, allowed 18 goals and made 11 saves.

The Purple Raiders outshot the Yellow Jackets, 38-18, including a 29-15 advantage in shots on goal. Mount Union had a 19-7 lead in ground balls, a 20-14 advantage in caused turnovers and led 21-7 in draw controls.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 15 when it travels to University Heights to play an OAC game against cross-town rival John Carroll University inside Don Shula Stadium at 7 p.m.
