BW Women’s Lacrosse Team Wins at Capital, 8-6; OAC Tourney Next

BEXLEY, Ohio – Sophomore midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) scored three goals as the Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team won at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 8-6, at Bernlohr Stadium in its regular season finale. BW (7-5, 4-2 OAC) opens OAC Tournament play next Wednesday, April 29 at John Carroll University at 7 p.m.

In addition to Kocher for BW, sophomore attack Jenna Turner (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) had two goals and an assist.  In goal for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore netminder Amanda Getto (Medina) faced 22 Crusader shots, including 15 on goal, allowed six goals and made nine saves.

Capital (10-4, 3-3 was led by junior midfielder Kim Hoerauf with a pair of goals.

In the first half, Capital took a 1-0 lead at 23:18 before Turner scored her 10th goal of the season via the fifth assist this season by freshman attack Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park - River Forest) at 23:07 to tie it at 1-1.  The Crusaders scored three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. BW responded by scoring three straight of its own. Sophomore midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) scored her 10th goal this season at 10:29 to make it 4-2, sophomore All-OAC midfielder Maddie Russell (Rocky River) scored her 24th at 2:08 to make it 4-3 and senior attack Victoria Budzyn (East Auroura, N.Y./ East Aurora) scored her 15th to tie it at 4-4 with 26 seconds left before the intermission.  It remained tied, 4-4, at halftime.

In the second half, BW took its first lead of the game at 5-4 at 27:16 when Kocher scored her second of the game and 11th this season. BW took a 6-4 lead and scored a fifth straight goal at 25:11 when junior attack Emma Harding (Akron/ Revere) scored her 23rd of the campaign via Turner's seventh assist this season.  Capital closed to 6-5 with a goal at 19:17 but Turner negated it at 16:36 with her second of the game and 11th this season via another Wheeler assist.

Again Capital made it a one-goal game at 7-6 with a tally at 12:32 but Kocher scored her third of the game and 12th this season at 11:31 to make it 8-6.  Harding was credited with her fifth assist of the season.  There were no more goals.

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 23-22, including a 16-15 advantage in shots on goal. BW also had a 27-22 lead in ground balls, but Capital had a 17-15 advantage in caused turnovers. BW was 1-for-8 in free position attempts and Capital was 2-for-8.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 29 with semi-final games at No.2-seed JCU. The OAC Championship Game and NCAA Division III National Tournament berth will be decided on Saturday, May 2.
