Softball Drops a Pair of Games to Mount Union in Regular Season Finale

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule as it dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games to No. 18 nationally-ranked University of Mount Union on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

BW (21-15, 19-15 OAC) and Mount Union (32-6, 29-5 OAC) were scheduled to play its final games on Sunday, May 9 but the games have been canceled due to forecasted rain.   The Yellow Jackets will host an OAC Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday, May 11 at 4 p.m.   The Purple Raiders, who are the OAC Regular season champions, will play a semifinal game on Thursday, May 13 at 4 p.m.

Mount Union won the first game by a final of 8-5 and took the second game in eight innings by a score of 4-3.

In game one, BW scored five runs on 10 hits as it plated three runs in the first and one in the fourth and one in the fifth off the solo blast by freshman catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark).  The Purple Raiders scored eight runs on 11 hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. 

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by freshman shortstop Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) as she went 4-for-4 with a run scored.  Bricker was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two runs batted-in (RBIs). Freshman centerfielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

In the circle, junior right hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) took the loss as she allowed eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, BW scored three runs on nine hits as it plated one run in the first and two in the sixth on the 11th homerun of the season for Bricker.  Mount Union scored four runs on seven hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by junior All-OAC designated player Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the circle, junior All-OAC right Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.
