Softball Cruises into OAC Tournament Semifinals, Defeats Heidelberg in Five Innings

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team run ruled Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game by a final score of 13-1 in five innings on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

BW (22-15), who was the third seed, advances to the semifinals and will face second seed Muskingum University on Thursday, May 13 in New Concord on the Donna J. Newberry Field at 4 p.m. Heidelberg (15-21-1), who was the sixth seed, ends its season.

The Yellow Jackets scored 13 runs on 14 hits as they plated one run in the first, four in the second, including two off the homerun from junior All-OAC designated player Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban), two in the third and six in the fourth.  The Student Princes scored one run on three hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the fourth.

The BW offense was led by freshman catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook park/Berea-Midpark) as she went 3-for-4 with one run scored.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) was 2-for-2 with a double, one run scored and three runs batted-in (RBIs).  Junior Academic All-OAC left fielder Amanda Crisler (Lorain/Amherst) went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Sophomore first baseman Raegan Thompson (Mentor) was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a career-high four RBIs.  Freshman shortstop Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) was 2-for-4 with a double two runs scored and an RBI. 

In the circle, junior All-OAC right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) won her 14th game of the season as she allowed one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts, including the final four batters she faced, and no walks.

The OAC Tournament championship series, which is the best two out of three, will begin on Saturday, May 15 on the campus of the highest remaining seed at 1 p.m.
